The Mommy State

Posted on 04/05/2010 10:33:12 AM PDT by Zanton

It's sloppy and incorrect to call Obama and his radical leftist allies "socialists." A handful are, no doubt. But most of them don't want to nationalize anything. Not even health care!

They do, however, seek to significantly expand the size and power of the state. They do quietly seek to have a friendly, European-style Leviathan monitor and control business and the Individual a great deal more than currently.

And it's all for our own good. The Obamanites fundamentally think they know more than the citizenry who elected them, and whom they theoretically serve. And, of course, they're morally superior. So they want to strongly rule on our behalf.

But the Obama Revolution doesn't truly aim to seize and own the banks, credit institutions, insurance companies, car manufacturers, hospitals, pharmacies, and other parts of our once-proud, once-free, once-dynamic, once-capitalist economy. It merely wishes to regulate the hell out of them.

The key idea here is control by Big Brother. The key idea here is fascism.

Maybe this is progress. After having been almost tortured for the past 160 years by Karl Marx and government-owned businesses, maybe grossly overregulating products and services is better than outright confiscating them.

But this state behavior is still tyranny. And it's still highly destructive to both the economy and the society.

And potentially this domination by the mega-state is just as immoral and mindless as overt seizure. The economy -- and large parts of the society -- still end up being government-run. The state still ends up dictating.

But rather than call this new version of statist and Orwellian control "socialism," maybe instead we should call it "mommy statism" -- since you need Big Momma's permission before you can pretty much do anything economically, or even personally.

Under Obama, Big Business, small businesses, and the Individual are no longer trusted as much to mind their own business and live their own lives. We're no longer regarded as adults -- as capable of making our own decisions economically, or in life.

Americans are being infantilized. We're being placed considerably more under the thumb of our doting, wise, maternal state. Ever more benevolent mandates and dictates come from Leviathan.

Under Obama, a loving Mommy now helpfully guides our business and personal lives much more. In the Obama-nation, we're all closely-monitored and tightly controlled -- for our own good, and the greater good -- by a sweet, kind, adoring, government Mommy!

While you are correct in fact, the truth is most people do not, will not take the time energy to determine exactly whether Obama is Marxist, Communist, Socialist, etc, it is plain he is against Aamerica and what has made America great. He ignores the Constitution, uses Executive orders in rampant ways never intended and unconstitutionally.

Thus he is making his own rules as he goes, using all his majority POWER and forcing on America, what the people do not want.

God help us in our day, in Jesus name, amen.

What you are describing is indeed socialism. Under 'national socialism' ownership of the means of production is left in private hands with regulation and planning a state function, whereas communism abolishes all private ownership and holds the means of production as a state asset. National socialism is exemplified by NAZI Germany where private industry remained in private hands but was severely regulated by state planning boards.

Barack Obama is a Big Brother nightmare! Sometimes fresh words and descriptions make people pay more attention. Right now I think the term "socialist" is a bit weak and off. I also ADORE the term "Nanny State fascist" to describe him!

"...not socialism but big mommism? Same thing."

Yeah, but I think "Mommy State" is a phrase with a really nasty edge to it. HUGELY insulting. ;-)

The more I read The Road to Serfdom by F.A. Hayek, the more scarier the present situation becomes.

Good point! Altho' I think people use most of these words in loose and imprecise ways. The best term for the World War II era Germans still seems to be "fascist." But all of these political ideals in their various forms -- communism, socialism, and fascism -- need to be brutally crushed.

So too 1930s New Deal and 1960s Great Society WELFARE STATISM!

Socialist, Communist, Fascists, Thugs, ASSWIPES. Who cares what they are called. They are simply traitors to the ideals of America and the freedoms and liberties that this Nation was founded on.

I agree. The New York City mayor is a do-gooder dolt and fascist from hell! Almost 100% oblivious to the ideal of freedom. :-(

Yep! That's a great book. I read it 30 years ago, but need to revisit it. I'm currently rereading Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. Also a great book about liberty! :-).

Yeah, but getting the words right is often hugely important. Precise language DESTROYS ignorance and lies -- DESTROYS tyranny and evil. Truth is the most powerful force in the universe.
