Nikki Haley signals South Carolina opting out of ObamaCare

Obama at first holds firm, then makes a slight concession

Governor-elect Nikki Haley of South Carolina was one of a number of incoming governors to meet with Obama in D.C. over the weekend at the Blair House. Haley challenged Obama over his health care legislation.

From the Charleston Post & Courrier "Obama opens door for S.C. opt-out, Haley says" Dec. 3:

COLUMBIA -- Republican Gov.-elect Nikki Haley said President Barack Obama agreed Thursday to consider letting South Carolina opt out of the federal health care overhaul if the state comes up with its own solutions to meet some of the important conditions of the national legislation.

Haley said she told Obama that South Carolina could not afford the health care mandate, and that it would cripple small businesses.

"I respectfully asked him to consider repealing the bill," she said, to which he clearly stated he would not. "I pushed him further and said if that's the case, because of states' rights, would you at least consider South Carolina opting out of the program?"

Obama told her he would consider letting South Carolina opt out, she said, if the state could find its own solution that included a state exchange, preventing companies from bumping people for pre-existing conditions and allowing insurance pooling.

She went on to say that she felt that his response was "genuine."

The Governor-elect is now vowing to "crunch numbers" and come up with a solution that would meet Obama's demands, and allow for SC to get out of ObamaCare.

Is it only me or the Great Governor of South Carolina shrewdly used her charm to personally attack Obama upfront and made him look like an idiot?

ONLY AN IDIOTIC PRESIDENT WOULD SIGN A LAW THAT CANNOT BE AFFORDED BY THE PEOPLE OF STATES LIKE SOUTH CAROLINA.

It’s really the decade of brave, strong and charming (not ugly physically and morally) women.

American Politics need more mothers as leaders to solve this huge huge economic mess we’re in.

I’m a boy. But women especially my mom have had innate talents of keeping the budget in tact.

Hats off to Madame Haley of SC!

What she did could lead to all of the states demanding the same thing, which in turn keeps the issue before the public, which could lead to it being overturned. Not bad for the the first meeting this rookie gov. had with with “The One”. He may have given her the rock to slay HC with.

Oops sorry.

I didn’t mean to offend physically “ugly” women. I forgot that beauty is relative.

I was thinking of the picture of Helen Thomas at HA!

Forgive me ladies.

She took his word as an opportunity to beat his HC plan.
She knows what she is dealing with in Obama.

I still have hopes that Obamacare will be struck down in the courts, but if states can opt out I could see the wheels coming off of Obamacare. I can’t imagine how the program could work with a significant number of states not participating.

Wonder is SC is one of the many states in the legal challenge to Obamacare. If not they should be. Negotiating with Obama will always be on his progressive (and possibly unconstitutional) terms.

I'd like to hear some Governors opt out of everything the Feds are doing outside the Constitution and to announce that taxes would be collected in the state at a calculated percentage of the federal rate.

"We have determined that 60% of government spending is unconstututional, so our citizens will be paying 40% of any taxes you levy."

Lord 0 is disgusting. The wanton abuse of power is so blatant and a lot of people in this country love him for it. I guess some people are born with the desire to be a slave.

Great post and thread. How did Americans raise and support large families before Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare?

The mandates of madmen. Dismantle the architecture of totalitarians.

Life, liberty and the pursuit and destruction of totalitarians.

Unless any of the lawsuits succeed and/or we’ve got a new president to cooperate in its repeal, all Americans will be subjected to it. If Haley gets a better deal for SC residents, she could have won a big advantage for her state.

Then what the Hell is the point of opting out ? The Maasai will be gone from office in two years along with his healthcare reform law, so Nikki needn't worry too much.

I had high hopes for Nicky Haley, but this quote sounds like "I looked into his eyes and saw his soul"...

I don't agree. Harldy comparable. What the heck is she supposed to say? In fact this sets him up to look like a liar if they eventually cannot come to some kind of agreement.
