I never cease to get a lump in my throat when reading about the battles of the Civil War. EVERYONE who fought and died so bravely were Americans
Wonderful color pics, what is the source?
I read a book this past year called "Traveller" by Richard Adams
It was a journal of the Civil war from the prespective of Traveller,
Gen. Robert E. Lee's horse, and in the book Traveller describes
his experience of the battle at little Round Top

What if Jackson was at Gettysburg? - I believe he would have pushed and Culps Hill and taken Cemetery Hill the first day.
What if Hancock hadn't been at Gettysburg? - Picketts charge may have broken the Union Center without Hancock's leadership. They did come close.
What if Buford hadn't forced Heth to waste the morning deploying and taking Seminary Ridge. Buford's delaying tactics made sure that Lee didin't have the high ground at the end of the First Day.

I saw the Gettyburg battlefield by guide, also. It is a fantastic way to see it. He began up at Buford's position and then moved us chronologically through the battle. Little Roundtop was awe-inspiring.

Very eloquently said. My ancestors fought for the Union, but am in awe of the courage, valor and honor shown by the Confederate soldiers as well (except for a very few, like the dreck who ran Andersonville). Given the politicization of the Confederate flag issue, I'm afraid the p.c. crowd won't quit until they dishonor the memory of the Confederate soldiers.

What a great story. Thanks for telling us about the other heroes who seem to have been crowded out by all the attention given Chamberlain. As Patton said, an Army is a team.

On my father's side, my ancestors fought for the Union. They fought in Tennessee...
But, the valor of these men are something to behold! I think of Chamberlain, of Lee, of Hancock, of Garnett, of Armistead, and especially of Stonewall Jackson... it makes me proud to be an American.

I'm going to Gettysburg this summer... to see the Battle Re-Enactments. We are stopping at Antietam first. And on the way back, at Shanksville, where flight 93 went down. Wall-to-wall heroes. The best of America.

On my mother's side were North Carolina abolitionists who fought for the Union in a mounted infantry regiment. I think they spent most of their time in Tennessee also.
The bravery shown by the Civil War soldiers was amazing. The munitions used made the battlefield so lethal, yet they didn't hesitate to expose themselves to fire and fight with determination.
It does indeed make one proud to be an American. I think one of the reasons most Americans find the Civil War so fascinating is that was the furnace that forged the modern American nation and character.

I'd like to see the Flight 93 memorial. Talk about proud to be an American!
(What's your theory, was Flight 93 headed for the White House or Capitol?)

I don't think we will ever know... Personally, I think Capitol... easier to see and hit from the air.

I'm inclined to think Capitol also. Beamer and the other heroes saved an awful day from getting even worse.
