Our vacation to Gettysburg was the most interesting vacation we ever took. Even the hobbit lass was mesmerized by the place. Little Round Top was eerie. But I gotta tell you, the Devil's Den was downright spooky.

When's the last time you heard of so many Generals listed as casualties? Command sure has changed.

Dad said that anyone who owned his own horse was made a general. :^)

I hope the Polish press is not like the American press. Sad news.

Good evening Samwise. I'll ask Matt.

Matt, Samwise was wondering and now I am too about how the press in Poland will handle the news now that you have lost a soldier. Is your press like ours in America, liberal and slanted to the left? Will they start printing junk about how you shouldn't be there or is the press supportive of the majority?

I'm going to replace my copy of 'Gettysburg' and also get 'Gods and Generals.' I could hardly believe how faithful 'Gettysburg' was to the character of Southern men (except Sheens' Lee!). It made my heart ache, really, watching. So wrong, but such good men.

Evening, just got in from my American Legion Ladies Aux craft meeting. We are providing 60 lap quilts to the spinal cord unit at the VA hospital in Memphis this year. We finished up putting on the labels and getting the thank you cards that go with them ready to hand out next week. We even had 4 extra to go to a nursing home were 4 elderly veterans reside. :-)

There is also the question of would this battle even happened if Jackson had not been killed at Chancellorsville just two months earlier.

Hi Team : ) Great..great thread today..and a good balance in posting.

yes..What if Jackson?
What if the Southern Arty did more damage in the centre

What if Longstreet **got his way..and they went for the wide march on the flanks?

The Boys from both sides comming up..marching for days straight in the hot Sun....and still they had it to give it good and hard to each other.

The scene from the Movie Gettysburg where the Old Officer tells Robert E lee about that ..."Bloody great Hill"..and...
"He just stood there..I said ..give me one division..and I will take that Hill"!

I kinda ponder if Lee was regretting entering Pennsy.

shift:
its kinda weird..Military projection did not change that much from the 1860'S until WW-1..save for Subs and planes and some electric goodies.
Just basically..*Walked or ran into frontal firepower
big Arty.."hey look they are comming back..well we will try again later".

Those Civil War painters..painting the flowing..colorfull battlelines with flags streaming..and a few explosions.
bet they were slugging back the booze at days end..trying to sleep off the Horror they saw.

Those Balck and White photos are still powerfull today..wow..
what can one say to that..what fortitude to stay on..and not go AWOL.

Kinda comical...some in the Union would go AWOL from one State reg..and sign on again with another under a different name..get their pay..and then split again.
I suppose some got caught..and shot or imprisioned...but it was epidemic for a time.
Chamberlin...how many times was He wounded?..6-8?

The Guy was giant...but the South had their tough sods too...often they are forgotten in the historic mix.

Hi ya Gail

The is a great testimony of the Heart.

It may seem small in scale..but it is profound for healing and self esteem.
Knowing you are Loved and cared for is powerfull..and it spreads in a good way to others.

When I was 20..had cut my hand badly, rquireing surgey.
Shortage of beds..they plopped me in the Burn wing...my room was 3 fellas who had been there nearly a year.
2 had lots of flowers and gizmo's ..the other guy..a few cards...one set of flowers.

Oh..I felt so sorry for them..their entire bodies where in bandages...
and I felt for the one guy..who did not have color surrounding his bed..nor the attention from visiters.

Thanks for Blessing these Veterans..it really matters.

I guess it's a lot different when a General can set back MILES away from the fighting and say, "Go get em' boys!",,,instead of a General on or at least near the line saying, "Follow me boys!!"

From the movie, Gen. Hal Moore said I'll be the first one to set foot on the battlefield and the last one off and I promise you I won't leave any one of you behind.

What a battle, what an outfit, what a general.

And, what a film and what an actor.

Contrast to Weasel Clark insisting General Sir Jackson fire upon the Russians.

Negative, Prince, I won't start WWIII for you.

I promoted Lt. Col. Hal Moore to Gen. for the battle--a poetic license inadvertant, inaccurate, and I am dropping for twenty.

As tragic as our Civil War was it's still so fascinating to read about the people of those times. Back when people really believed in a cause and were willing to fight for it.
