I have a hunch that if Lee had launched a "March to New York," Lee would be the arch-villian of American history.
Did the South lose because they were too nice, I doubt it, but it was probably a contributing factor.

A good many white Southerners 100-odd years ago thought Sherman the most unspeakable ogre in all of human history, and a good many of the white people of the South, especially those who live in middle Georgia or South Carolina, still do.
I posted a thread on "Uncle Billys" birthday and lord the hue and cry from the noe-confederates some something to see.
One person posted an article about a guy from Virginia(?) who placed a clause in his will stating that his land could not be sold to ANYONE with the name Sherman(first or last name).

Devil Or Angel,,,,now you really don't want me to answer this one, but I don't think he ever got his wings.
...make them so sick of war that generations would pass before they would again appeal to it. --Gen.William T. Sherman
"To the petulant and persistent secessionists, why, death in mercy, and the quicker he or SHE is disposed of the better. Satan and the rebellious saints of Heaven were allowed a continuous existence in hell merely to swell their punishment. To such as would rebel against a Government so mild and just as ours was in peace, a punishment equal would not be unjustified."
.Gen. William T. Sherman
"There is a class of people [in the South], men, women and children, who must be killed or banished before you can hope for peace and order."

Gettysburg - The Second Day
July 2, 1863
Lee considered making his main effort around Cemetery Hill and Culps Hill on the second day. Ewell thought Cemetery Hill couldn't be taken, so Lee determined to send Longstreet's First Corps south to attack Meade's left flank. Controversial to this day, Longstreet's corps was only ready to attack at 4 P.M., despite the fact that the jump off point was only four miles from that night's bivouac. Hood's division on the far right began the advance toward the Round Tops and the Wheatfield at around 4 P.M. while McLaws' division waited until 5:30 P.M. to attack near the Peach Orchard.
2 flanking attacks which cost the South some 15,000 men.
Would Jackson have advised these attacks so late in the day?

I'm in Columbus, and a fan of the South also.

Down boy! Now remember, we just report what's being written, then it's all open for discussion. We of course then are free to give our own opinions. Never mistake what we report as what we necessarily believe.
We report, you decide. I think we had an idea this might fire up some folks. :)
It's a good way to vent before the holidays isn't it?
Good morning and (((Hugs))) to help you feel better.

I'm really conflicted on this one. Sherman was doing something that had not been done on this scale before.
My personal feelings are that you do what it takes to win and defeat your enemy, my problem comes with the fact that I don't look at the South as the enemy. That Sherman did this to Americans is what bothers me. While I believe that he did not condone all the actions of his Bummers, he was the commander responsible for what, in some cases was an undisciplined mob, and not an Army.
Sherman's March was the culminating tradegy in America's most tragic period. Sherman was also one of the first to find that you may be able to defeat a people using these tactics but you cannot conquer them.
