LOL. I'd really like to think about Virginia as a gathering spot, that way we could see some civil war sights and go to DC and Maryland, even up to Gettysburg on a long day. I'm sure it won't be anyday soon, maybe for the Foxhole's second or third anniversary. We'll have to see.

Some of the people up North, just like in the South thought slavery was wrong, but they also didn't want the Blacks up North competing for jobs there.

IMHO, the war was not all about slavery like they try to push down our throats now a days. It was about States Rights and whether the Federal government followed the Constitution. Slavery was the issue hot heads used to inflame emotions.

Even though Longstreet was slow to attack on the 2nd day, I don't know much he was to blame. Since his troops could be observed, he tried to arrive on the battlefield by stealth. Wrong directions and a countermarch contributed to his lateness.

Where Longstreet was truly late was at 2nd Manassas. But that's another thread.

I think the blame for the loss of life rests soley on Lee who refused Longstreet's plea to allow the Army to sweep up and behind the Union army. Lee would not allow it... therefore when Hood pleaded with Longstreet to do the same thing, Longstreet would not allow it.

I don't think Jackson would have a problem authorizing a late afternoon attack. He did so at Chancellorsville for example. I think Jackson combined with Longstreet could have persuaded Lee that his present course of action was the wrong tactic for the battlefield.

Lee's plan called for a wave of attacks (fancy French name - don't know it, sorry) against the whole of the Union Army's front. This happened, but not to the degree that Lee had hoped. I think this strategy is the reason why Hood's attack began at 4:00 and McLaws at 5:30.

YEP!

to quote one professor, Dr Susan Brownmiller of Harvard University,

" if you were poor, black, red, brown, jewish, roman catholic,a recent immigrant or born female, you were a TARGET FOR TERROR (emphasis mine.) in the southland. any fair-minded person, who reads the origional records of the invasion of the south by the federal army, must come to the conclusion that the invaders acted throughout the war in an un-civilized & swinish manner."

1888 Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh cuts off his left ear

That's too bad. He has always been a big influence in my life.

Meet Chance Van Gogh. Chance because he never dies no matter how hard he tries to kill himself and Van Gogh for losing his left ear after a bad burn.

i strongly suspect that lincoln, the tyrant & war criminal, billie sherman, benjamin "the best" butler & numerous other of the "filth that flowed down from the north" have a ringside seat by the fire right now & for eternity.

Sounds like some "let's come up with a plausible excuse after the fact" being done by the author.

Morning Billbears.

Sherman may have been an effective General but he was rascist through and through.

The Foxhole has already covered some of the Indian "battles" and we have some more coming up of how the Union Army handled the "Indian problem".

proper Southern ettiquette demands it be posted thusly: Sherman (*spit*)

I can understand the feeling, it's how I always mention the Clintons. All I can give him credit for is being effective, he certainly did not have what anyone could call honor.

HiJinx, I know for a fact, we'll be driving through your state in late August or early Septmeber BECAUSE.....

Drum roll please......

I'm going to be an Aunt. The baby is due on September 11th, my birthday. Yippee!!!! My sister just called me and told me. I was the first one to be called. I'm so honored.

This is my sister who is married to the F18 Super Hornet pilot. They have been waiting for a few years to try for a baby because he had to go out to sea so often. Now they are in Lemoore, California and he will be continent bound for awhile.

I'm so happy. I can't wait to take the kids to see the Grand Canyon. And to see a new baby in the family. This is my first niece or nephew.

Oh, and my divinity came out perfect. Quit unusual for me. It's such a great day. :)

The South could only have won by breaking the will of the North to continue the war.

No matter how many battles the South won until the North was willing to call it quits there was no chance of a Southern military victory over the North. The South didn't want to conquer the North anyway, they just wanted to be let go.
