Good morning.
Just finished taking our dog to the lake for a swim. Had a great time.
Standing by for XP SP 2. Should be coming out any day now on automatic updates. We'll see what happens.

Thanks Valin.
The fur trappers and Mountain Men were the ones who really helped open up the West. They don't get as much credit as they deserve.

Cold Well water! The only time I couldn't stand it was when you had a well that had the "egg water" taste.

My first dog Sam loved the water as long as his feet could touch bottom. He wasn't much on swimming but loved to wade and splash around.

It does! I trust you and Sam are both well this morning. Could have used a longer weekend but then that is the case all the time!

Just finished taking our dog to the lake for a swim. I'll bet that was fun. You'll have to take pictures sometime for us.

Good to hear.
Somewhere along the line something went wrong when we had to work five days and rest/play only two. It's backwards I tell ya!

Sam, This is really off-topic but that 'egg water' taste happens when a well is tapped into a coal seam. The middle to southern part of Missouri on the Kansas border is strip mining country. The coal lies less than 50 or 80 feet under the surface. Back when wells were dug by hand they were rarely more than 40 feet deep and the spring water above the coal seam is sweet and clear. When they began to drill deep for water they would often punch through the seam and then the sulphur in the coal would taint the water with that nasty taste and smell. Even sleeving the hole didn't completely get rid of the taste. Chickens will drink it and don't seem to care but horses and most dogs shy away from it and it is bad for washing clothes in. It also makes a cows milk taste funky.. On my grandpa's farm we had three sweet wells and two springs that always ran clear.

One of my more offbeat reads was a history of salt. It's amazing how important the commodity was, mostly because of its use in food preservation, and how much history and geography it explains. When Gandhi began his campaign for independence from Britain he chose salt as his key issue because the British prohibited Indians from making salt and forced them to buy British salt.
The advent of refrigeration and modern canning and then Morton's industrialization of salt production put and end to local operations like Booneslick.

One of the major passes in the Sierras is Carson Pass. Near it is the Carson Spur.I grew up about 30 miles downslope from here.

Morning, all. Canyon de Chelly on the Big Res in Arizona is where Carson cornered the Navajo in some savage fighting. It also figured in an earlier Spanish massacre. It's a beautiful place and well worth a visit. It's not far from Monument Valley, where most of the John Ford/John Wayne westerns were shot.
Bent's Old Fort has been turned into a national monument and usually has some re-enacters around. It's near La Junta and is also a nice visit.
Fort Garland in the San Luis Valley has been restored and is also a nice place.
Of course, Santa Fe and Taos are fascinating places in the old towns, although the galleries weren't' there in Carson's day. :)
