Morning Iris7.

I wonder if the world will ever learn that it's easier to stop fanatics before they gain power.

Morning Mayor

"From the example of the past, the man of the present acts prudently so as not to imperil the future."

Sounds a lot like "Today, is yesterday's tomorrow"

1995 Calvin/Hobbes (comic strip), dies

A sad day. First the FarSide and then Calvin And Hobbes.

Morning Glory Snip, Sam and I7~

Thank you for making this part of the Battle of the Bulge available. Once again, I don't know how or where I could have found out about this except here. I can't imagine the frustration our "boys" must have felt following all the court martial proceedings. To borrow a Marine expression, "what a cluster f---."

Gotta question . . .

Thus Fragmentary Order 27 issued by Headquarters, 328th Infantry on 21 December for the attack scheduled for the following day says: "No SS troops or paratroopers will be taken prisoners but will be shot on sight."

What is a "Fragmentary Order"? Thanks.

A Frag Order is a short version of the Operations order, it usually only contains new information and doesn't repeat the entire Operations order again. it's usually a day-to day update on things.

First I thought it was "Peiper" (sounds like apple "Pie-per") then "Pieper" (sounds like "peep-er"). Looks from the photos that the first is correct.

You are correct, the first pronunciation is right. In German, all "i.e." vowel combinations are pronounced with the emphasis on the second vowel. That vowel is pronounced as a hard vowel. Had the vowels been reversed, the second pronunciation you considered would be correct.

This is a rule that never varies, which makes it easy to figure out German pronunciation, unlike in English (which drives the average German nuts since English really has no hard and fast rule about how to pronounce i.e. combos).

I'd love to have that "Islam" graphic as a bumper sticker for my car, but I'm afraid that I'd get pulled over and charged with a hate crime if I did.

Thanks Sam. I guess the "Operational" order (encompassing Frag.#27) was a whopper!

PS And don't go posting a graphic of a whopper hamburger! (yeah . . . I know you) ;^)

No, I meant I had seen Peiper's name spelled Pieper as well. I was wondering what the correct spelling was. The booking photo made things clear.

Afternoon PsyOp.

Yeah, funny how "hate Crimes" only work one way isn't it?
