The problem with a monarchy is it's based on the ridiculous notion that because your grandfather was a good ruler you'll be one.

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time".
Winston Churchill

I used to believe the same thing. The faith started to fade from real experience, which provoked reading, which helped understanding. It is a hard faith to give up, faith in the "people". Especially when it is as fashionable as it is now.

Some of the Founders thought the spirit of democracy the greatest threat to the Republic. And then there was Jefferson. (!!!) Of course, Jefferson liked the French Revolution.

I'll go with the "Hamilton was correct" school.

Somedays I will go farther than that, and say that Liberty and Democracy are antithetical.

Plato, Aristotle, and Machiavelli believed tyranny followed democracy invariably. You sure see it in the Greeks. "Democracy" was considered terrible for a thousand years. The Founders hated democracy, and thought it the greatest threat to the Republic after "faction", meaning North - South friction. Hitler was elected honestly to office by a democracy.

What I am getting at is that we are coming into a "tyrannical man" period (as Plato put it). "Tyrannical man" is a widespread individual character shift over some time, a generation or two. The Democrat Party shows this happening in our time. Clinton is an example, although "tyrannical men" are uniformly visible these days. Remember that this was not true until quite recently.

Would rather avoid the tyrant. Believe the only alternative is a king. I do believe we will get the tyrant, though. At least one of them.
