To my Rush Limbaugh donor,
I am writing to thank you for your Adopt A Soldier subscription to the Rush 24/7 program. I was thrilled and pleasantly surprised at how quickly the process was completed and matched with your generous gift. I must admit I was somewhat reluctant at first to participate as I felt a little guilty for accepting such a contribution. However, Rush eloquently addressed my reservations on his show last week and I signed up the very next day.
My name is [name withheld] and I am a [rank withheld] in the United States Air Force. My [spouse's name withheld] and I are currently stationed overseas as part of the U.S. European Command located at Patch Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany. EUCOM consists of members from all four branches of the military; Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.
We live in a small town [name withheld] north of Stuttgart which gives us a lot of driving time to make great use of the MP3 audio files from Rush's site. We do have American Forces Network Radio (AFN) available here, but unfortunately they only carry the first hour of Rush. This single hour is countered with multiple hours of National Public Radio. Not exactly fair or balanced if you ask me.
We also have AFN TV via satellite which has several channels carrying U.S. network programming and also one 24/7 news channel. Not surprisingly, the majority of the news is from CNN, MSNBC and other main stream media sources. Fox News, our particular choice for unbiased news, does get some airtime but the high rated shows are buried in non-primetime slots. For example The O'Reilly Factor is on at 10AM and Hannity & Colmes is on at 3AM. Fox & Friends, our favorite morning news show, has only one hour broadcast and that's only 3 days a week.
Conversely, CNN has the following daily shows represented. American Morning - 3 hours, Anderson Cooper - 2 hours, Larry King - 1 hour, 4 more hours are taken up with Headline News and other CNN programming. Hardball with Chris Mattews, The Today Show, Good Morning America and Nightline also receive daily full show airtime. The anti-Administration coverage is expanded when you factor in PBS Tavis Smiley, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and incredibly The Daily show with Jon Stewart!
As you can see, the same biased media coverage from certain sectors in America are also being foisted directly upon our military. During an overseas assignment we are definitely a captive audience when it comes to English language programming. Even though American Forces Radio and Television Service is under the Department of Defense, the California based civilians who run AFN and make the program decisions appear to be unaccountable to us and seem to have an agenda in what content is broadcast. Our Soldiers are watching, and our enemies are too.
The preceding is meant to illustrate why The Rush Limbaugh Show, the Adopt A Soldier program and your thoughtful gift are important elements in countering the "Blame America First" voices that get a disproportional amount of media attention.
I want to again Thank You for your support and your support of my fellow military members. We wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. May God Bless you, our Troops and may God Bless America.
Signed, [name withheld] BearsPop
