Peanut Allery Disqualification for New Recruit? (vanity)

hi, all. my son is ready to sign up with the Marines - but he has a sevier allergy to peanuts. is this a disqualifier, or if not, is there much chance of exposure in the field? it is quite a sever allergy. thanks!

A severe allergy to peanuts would be a disqualifier ... picking your meals isn't an option in the Corps. When I served a young recruit, in splendid physical condition, was dropped because of a knee injury sustained in H.S. football. His knee had a tendency to swell after long runs ... he lasted about 10 days.

I do not think so. However, if I am wrong, then all he needs is a waiver. I almost did not make it to boot camp because I am deaf at certain tones. Nevertheless, I was able to get a waiver to go. My hearing was not an issue ever in the Marines.

I think a lot of MREs have penut oil in them --- e.g., the Chicken w/ Thai sauce.

I applaud your son wanting to serve but as a career Marine I would say look for another profession. We have no way of ensuring peanut products are not in a meal. Especially in MRE's. I am not Muslim but do not eat pork so I have had to struggle to ensure no pork products and I am sure there has been a slip or two. We have Muslim service members and they are caught in the same trap. I am sorry for bad news but I want to spare you the pain down the road.

Peanut allergies are a disqualifying variable in military processing. I myself was DQed for a peanut allergy, went for a medical waiver via an allergist, got several blood tests, and two different points of view on my case. It was stated to be a mild condition. I heard back from the DOD, and i was permanently disqualified after two months of waiting.

If i were you, if the allergy is not that severe, you should keep the allergy under the sheets.

Hope he has more luck than I'm having with the military. I've been turned down for the Marines and Army for a medical disorder, one I don't want to disclose for fear of shooting myself in the foot (tried to get a waiver with the Army and still got turned down). I'm currently trying for the ANG, which has changed its med standards.

Good luck to him. And if your son doensn't get in, he can come to me if he needs someone to talk to about it.
