Vanity: Parent Question about travel after OSUT

Hi All.
I have a question about my son, who's graduating OSUT at Ft. Benning in December. The ITB website says that I can pick him up after graduation, but what about his travel to his first station?
Does the Army pay for his travel from Benning to his first station?
Can I fly him home from Benning?
How the heck does all this work? I'd like to pick him up after graduation, fly him home (western US), then get him to his duty station. What does the Army expect, do, and pay for?

I was Air Force fairly recently (1995-2004), and I am sure things are the same for all the services. The DOD will pay for all travel and moving expenses from his "home of record" upon receiving orders to a new duty station. When you pick your son up, are you driving home? The miles are reimbursable. If you have to fly, his ticket should have already been taken care of when he signed up for training. However, if you are flying to a destination other than his home of record, the DOD will cover the plane ticket up to the amount that the ticket to his home of record would have cost. Any remaining amount will be deducted from his pay. All of this information should be made available to him, but you can always call the base personnel office with leave/official travel questions, there may be some specifics you need to know. Also, what base is the training held? I would be glad to find a link for you that probably has a valuable FAQ for parents and loved ones dealing with post training questions. Let me know...

Hmmmmm..... Maybe things are different now, but when I was in the Navy (1970-1990), the Navy paid for travel from my current duty station to my next duty station. Any excess costs incurred due to a detour to my home of record or any other vacation spot came out of my pocket. In this guy's case, he'd be reimbursed for travel expenses from his training location to his next duty station.

Maybe things are different now. I dunno.

Hi, AF's reply is pretty much on the mark.

It's been a long time since I did time at Benning, but he should be allowed some leave time after graduating Infantry OSUT. If there was no Holiday break (Christmas), he should be eligible for leave to visit home.

If I recall correctly, he should be getting orders about 1 month before graduation about where his next duty station will be.

He should talk to his Drill Sgt to see what needs to be done about requesting leave after graduation.
