Lord,

Keep our Troops forever in Your care

Give them victory over the enemy...

Grant them a safe and swift return...

Bless those who mourn the lost.

Amen.
.

FReepers from the Foxhole join in prayer
for all those serving their country at this time.

U.S. Military History, Current Events and Veterans Issues

Where Duty, Honor and Country
are acknowledged, affirmed and commemorated.

Our Mission:

The FReeper Foxhole is dedicated to Veterans of our Nation's military forces and to others who are affected in their relationships with Veterans.

In the FReeper Foxhole, Veterans or their family members should feel free to address their specific circumstances or whatever issues concern them in an atmosphere of peace, understanding, brotherhood and support.

The FReeper Foxhole hopes to share with it's readers an open forum where we can learn about and discuss military history, military news and other topics of concern or interest to our readers be they Veteran's, Current Duty or anyone interested in what we have to offer.

If the Foxhole makes someone appreciate, even a little, what others have sacrificed for us, then it has accomplished one of it's missions.

We hope the Foxhole in some small way helps us to remember and honor those who came before us.

Memorial Day 2008

"Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day." -- VFW 2002 Memorial Day address

Memorial Day used to be a solemn day of mourning, a sacred day of remembrance to honor those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Businesses closed for the day. Towns held parades honoring the fallen, the parade routes often times ending at a local cemetery, where Memorial Day speeches were given and prayers offered up. People took the time that day to clean and decorate with flowers and flags the graves of those the fell in service to their country.

Unfortunately, when Congress made Memorial day into a mandatory three-day weekend in with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363), it made it all the easier for us to be distracted from the spirit and meaning of the day.

Thank you for this beautiful thread on this blessed Memorial Day.

May God hold in the palm of his hand all of those warriors who have given their all to protect and preserve the freedoms of the United States. God bless them.

Thanks to those who are still with us and, especially, to those who are in Iraq and Afghanistan. May God continue to cover them with his grace.

Freepers,

I wanted to let my freeper friends, particularly the ones who have kept up with my posts on Delbert Fellers, WWII hero, Silver Star recipient and fishing buddy, know that I received the dreaded phone call about 10 minutes ago.

Delbert died at 9 p.m. last night. It is fitting he died on Memorial Day.

He will buried Thursday with full military honors, and I’ll be there.

His son said he had planned to bring Delbert here to fish with me on his 86th birthday, in mid June, if he was able to make the trip. It was the one wish he had for his birthday, and his son said he looked forward to it so much, was so excited.

The threads on Delbert are pasted below:

Thank you Delbert for helping create the world we live in today.

Because of you and your brothers, it is a far better world than humanity has ever had.

Godspeed Delbert, you have earned your rest like few can.

I am sorry for your loss my friend. You were a good friend to the man, and I know he loved you dearly, as you loved him. I am confident he is being welcomed with the words “Well done good and faithful servant”.

"He ended up in the Pacific theatre, with the 1st Wildcat Division, Company F."
The good Lord chooses when each will be taken. How befitting he took this old warrior on Memorial Day. May his soul now rest in peace. His tour of duty is now complete.
