UPTON, MA — Alfred Consigli opened a worn leather case and pulled out a delicate datebook from 1943.
“I have a lot of girls’ names in here,” the 86-year-old said with a smile. More than that, in there is a day-to-day history of where he was in England, France, Germany and Australia in 1943, the year he was drafted into the Army.
“Everything happens for a reason,” said Mr. Consigli.
In the living room of his small house in Upton are some examples — black and white photos of German prisoners; rubble in Munich; his tank, nicknamed Blood-N-Guts; members of his crew getting a haircut while serving on the front lines.
They are rare photos taken by a rare 18-year-old sharpshooter from Milford, with cameras found in a suitcase he happened upon while searching a German house for Nazis. He kept two of the cameras for himself; he doesn’t remember how many were in the suitcase, other than it was filled, and he traded all but the two.
