Countries spy on each other all the time

Agreed, there had to be something there that made them feel the risk was worth it, but I can't even begin to guess what it could have been.

Well, if the Chief of Naval Operations couldn't find out, that doesn't give us much of a chance, does it?

Not much I guess, I was telling Snippy maybe the LIBERTY got wind of Israel deploying those "non-exsistant" Nukes.

You make a very good point, Sam. The Kennedy administration was very concerned about the Israeli nuclear program and even made a run at trying to get them to give it up. It would not surprise me at all if one of Liberty's missions, maybe its primary mission, was to monitor that. If the Israelis had deployed some nukes forward and Liberty caught 'em at it, that might be serious enough for the Israelis to knock Liberty out of service - that would be exremely sensitive info.

Just a thought, cuz we were trying to think what would be important enough that Israel would take a chance on attacking a US Ship. IMHO, that would be worth the risk.

I agree. I don't know when our intel figured out that the Israelis had actually built a bomb. In the early sixties we just knew they had a reactor and were working on a program. In 1967 we may not have known they acutally had an assembled weapon.

Wow, I sure hope we don't get any visitors from the Mossad for "figuring out" the LIBERTY mystery. LOL!

*Aaaaar!*
I must by needs write a story now, a story of travel, climate, ships, and betrayal by pocket lint.
Wait, that's a story subject for something else.
Um, nevermind.
I guess I'll just ask how much fun you had and leave it at that.

Evening all!

During the summer of 1967 there was much discontent in the State Department and the National Security Council over the LIBERTY matter. Secretary Rusk and Congressman Abernathy said that the Congress was enraged and absorbed in the issue, and that there was much hostility toward the official story. Rusk told his colleagues in Luxembourg that the attack was deliberate, and Hickenlooper and other senators were still angry in July when confronting McNamara. None of this discontent or political current was reported in the TIMES at the time, but was only discovered and reported later by the LIBERTY men and their newsletter.

Don't knock the "COCO", it was Tandy's best kept secret. It could run rings around more expensive computeres with 3rd party software. I owned several of them. In fact it still lives and has a website.
