Section 245(i) Passed in Senate--House Will Vote Early Next Week

At the request of President Bush, the Senate passed S. 778, the Section 245(i) extension bill by unanimous consent on Thursday night. Section 245(i) permits illegal aliens who have established an employment or familial relationship while in the U.S. illegally to adjust their status with the INS after payment of a $1,000 fee. It also allows illegal aliens to avoid the State Department background checks for other immigrants coming from overseas.

As in previous years, the immigration lobby and now President Bush are trying to revive this loophole as a backdoor approach of amnesty. Many of those who have supported “temporary” extension of Section 245(i) are really after a permanent extension, thereby institutionalizing illegal immigration as an avenue for gaining permanent residence. This is manifest in the fact that S. 778 allows additional illegal aliens who were not earlier eligible for the provision to benefit as well.

House Republican leaders, under pressure from the Bush Administration, have agreed to go along with the measure the Senate passed. The House will take up the measure early next week, perhaps on Monday. Bush said this week that he would like to see Section 245(i) passed as a good will gesture to Mexican President Vicente Fox.

Under the compromise, the 245(i) program would be extended through April 2002, or four months after the Immigration and Naturalization Service establishes regulations for the program. The extension would apply to illegal aliens who meet the program's requirements by August 15 by proving they are related to a legal U.S. resident or have a job or the promise of a job in the United States.

What You Need to Do

Contact your Representatives (Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121) and tell them you are opposed to an extension of Section 245(i).

Talking Points

Section 245(i) Encourages Illegal Immigration—It sends the message that it is OK to break the law as long as you can pay $1,000 to the INS.

Section 245(i) Upends U.S. Law—Congress in 1996 declared that those who overstay their visas or are otherwise illegal aliens should be barred from legal entry into the country for three or 10 years depending on the extent of the violation of U.S. immigration law. Section 245(i) allows illegal aliens to evade this penalty. Section 245(i) Harms Legal Immigrants—Those applicants patiently staying in their home countries awaiting an immigrant visa, as U.S. immigration law requires, will be forced to wait even longer.

Just remember that when there is no lettuce in your supermarket since it rots in fields with no pickers to pick it, you wait 30 minutes at a Burger King drive thru, and the bathroom at your office is filthy.

I don't see "home grown" Americans exactly lining up for those jobs.

OK, enough of this myth. I have worked these jobs. I am a 34yo lily-white male of British and Scandinavian heritage. My parents were very well off while I was in my later years of growing up. I scrubbed floors, toilets, ashtrays, bakeries, horse stalls, hospitals, etc. I did this to pay for college and have spending money. Many of my peers were illegals, but most were other white-males of the suburbs of San Francisco/Oakland. Young males can perform these jobs as a way to enter the work force. Perhaps if the gov't goodie-goodie programs were not paying the bottom 10% of the population not to work, we would not need to import unskilled labor. An additional benefit would be the economic expansion of that squandered capital being reinvested in creating real jobs for these unskilled as they matured in the work force.

The only thing I see on this thread is xenophobia run amuck and people putting their head in the sand to the fact that we share a 1500 mile border with Mexico.

The only thing I hear from neo-cons and social libs is the perpetuation of the myth of the "need" for these illegals. It is not xenophobia to ask that your country hold on to what made it great, and spinning welfare checks to all points of the globe isn't what made America great. The hordes of unskilled illegals which flood our nation is an unqualified disaster.

If I knew what a pain in the a$$ they would be, I would have picked my own lettuce, flipped my own burger, and scrubbed my own toilet. Wait a minute, I already did. What's your excuse?

Those are jobs which should be filled by welfareites who should be put to work doing menial unskilled labor instead of being allowed to lay around and breed.

...and Bush feels he needs those votes.

He is correct, as usual.

"Bush said this week that he would like to see Section 245(i) passed as a good will gesture to Mexican President Vicente Fox."

Bush is beginning to display an alrming lack of character appraisal. First he calls Islam a "peaceful" religion. Then he calls that bloated sot from Massachusetts a "good guy". Now he is interested in extending a good will gesture towards Vicente Fox at your expense and mine.

The best good will gesture for our bueno Amigo Senior Fox would be a twenty foot high wall topped with barbed wire and backed up by machine gun nests and attack dogs accross our southern border. Maybe then he might get the message.

Americans, especially American politicans, do not understand foreigners. They think they can buy their support the same way they buy elections. The ONLY thing foreigners respect is a tough adversary. The only thing we can ever hope to get from them IS respect. Forget appreciation and friendship. All the aid we have poured into foreign ratholes over the last century didn't do half as much as what a bunch of Yankee gunboats accomplished under a REAL Presidnet.

Not only this, but now Hitlery wants us to pay the families of illegals killed in the WTC attacks. Anything to payoff the "constituents", eh?

For such a short, tiny, woman she sure packs a lot of hate and evil!!

I guess that's from never having to work for a living(cavorting around with Vince Foster in law office doesn't count as work)!
