MAG: WOMEN OFF FRONT LINES
Sat Oct 20 2001 14:32:19 ET
WASHINGTON -- As the Pentagon brass prepares for the Afghan ground war, the administration is reconsidering--and will most likely kill--Clinton-era proposals to put women into battle zones, US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT claims in fresh editions.
MORE
"That's all changing," a senior Defense official tells the magazine set for publication on Monday.
Frontline "units won't involve women," adds another Pentagon big.
And that's in Afghanistan or anywhere else.
What's more, Bush appointees are planning to sideline the organization that fought to put women closer to the frontlines.
"They will slowly be minimalized and marginalized," says the Pentagon official about the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services.
The switch comes at a critical time, since the Army is creating new reconnaissance and surveillance units open to women, despite a tradition of keeping female troops out of firefight zones.
The change represents a victory for brass who opposed the Clinton rules and the private Center for Military Readiness, which has fought applying political correctness to the Pentagon.
But turning the ship has just begun: Center boss Elaine Donnelly says many of the Clinton rules are unknown to the Bushies.

Nice to see some real warriors running the show(The Pentagon and Defense Dept. that is). Political Correctness has no place whatsoever in our military. I wish them luck. Clinton left a very damaging legacy on this front. (Amongst a slew of others of course)

The military's job is to kill people and break things.
PC'ness and social experimentation has no place in the military. Period, end of story.

Thank GOD.
P.S. I'm a woman.

This is very welcome news, indeed. My only complaint would be to wonder why this was not initiated on January 20th at 12:01 P.M.
I have always felt that this was the real reason that Clinton deserved to be impeached, not for the trial coverup of a private escapade. In trashing the Chivalric heritage, he endangered the American future. (See The Abuse Of Power.)
The point is not just military efficiency in the short run. What Clinton did undermines the whole concept of male responsibility and honor, so essential to bringing out the best in all of us.

since the Army is creating new reconnaissance and surveillance units open to women Can you imagine trying to do reconnaissance in a burkha?

GOOD! Thank you President Bush! Someone had to stop this "women in combat" nonsense. What a pernicious bunch of total crap it was. I think a "real war" will make this easier because people will see, simply from observing news footage, how totally stupid and disastrous the idea of women in combat always was. This was done so about half a dozen women could pretend to be generals. Now, how about letting the military academies go back to being exclusively male instead of co-ed and hopelessly feminized.

Man alive, I'll be so glad to see DACOWITS go away!

In civillian areas, I agree. The military is different though. The reason is chemistry and morale.
I have no problem with women in the military. In combat(outside of pilots), it's another story.

Oh puleez!! What shade of lipstick goes best with cammies?

The best people for combat are men. Women are not physically, nor psychologicaly suited for combat.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing little Miss Chelsea put on the front lines and send her Mom along with her.

Read my post #10 and call ME the Taliban, newbie. Women have shown again and again that they CANNOT HANDLE the physical requirements of combat or even of standard basic training. I see the ROTC students on early runs most mornings when I drive in to work at the university where I teach. Guess who's always dead last and totally worn out (the gals). The presence of women in combat units is extremely harmful to unit cohesion in many ways, as well.
I am a gal who teaches in a traditionally male field, and there is NO reason why I cannot teach the material the same as any man. There are PLENTY of reasons why I should not be in a combat-related position in the military. Both sexes do not need to have access to every single job there is.

Comparing this to desegregation and the Taliban's treatment of women is ridiculous. The military is not a democracy and should never serve as a social petri-dish or as an ongoing affirmative action exercise.

"This was done so about half a dozen women could pretend to be generals" Yes- I just saw "general" Claudia Kennedy's book prominently displayed at the Elmendorf BX. Didn't see anyone buying it, though. I already have plenty of kindling for the fireplace, so I didn't buy any copies, either.
I'm guessing that these women liked playing soldier in peacetime a lot- but being blown to small pieces on a distant battlefield is really not that glamorous, is it?
But I want to be fair- if these gals want to try Infantry life out for real, let's form a "test" Battalion that would be all-female, and see how they do. (And no MedEvacs for breaking a nail...)
