Ditto. Almost like he's playing as bait.

"I have noticed Ashcroft has a tendency to grimace."......painful rectal itch?
To: Penny1
Ashcroft's distress could be something as simple as coming from a hand-wringing session over not being able to track down more about what the threat really is, and the feeling that sooner or later the other shoe is going to drop if they don't get a handle on this stuff... Penny, that news conference was a heck of a lot more than a "hand-wringing session"
Men don't hand-wring.
I don't think even Janet Reno would be "hand-wringing" and she's close to being a man.

I know what you are saying, however, I would be letting out a sigh too if I were in his shoes. Just going in front of the media right now is enough to do that. And the wording is critical, I would think. They need to be honest and let us know what is going on (potentially), yet they do not want to make it sound like we should lock ourselves in the closet and bypass an opportunity to support the economy. These guys are in a bad situation and the sigh only underlines it. Plus, I am sure there are those who do not want this information released simply because they don't want to be calling wolf. The pressure must be intense, regardless.

maybe the stock market knew it too. The market was down 275 points today. How many people does it take to sell enough stock to make that happen? How many would have to know? How could they keep it a secret? Just a few questions.

I believe Ashcroft's alert to us is also a warning to terrorists in the hope they will be disuaded. By placing all police and federal agents on a special alert it will be appreciably harder for terrorists to suceed. A smart move to counter tip of threat.

Disclaimer: this is my
opinion not a fact. Pass the tin foil please.
I think they not only know something's about to happen, but like you say, I think they have a very good idea what it is. I watched Ashcroft and Mueller this afternoon in frustration: why can't they tell us? What can be that bad? I can think of several things of course, any one of which could be disastrous beyond comprehension. But it irritates me that they likely know, but won't say what it is. Ashcroft looked and sounded very grave. So did Mueller.
Or maybe I'm just imagining things...

We know what Ashcroft, a devout Christian, already thinks about Halloween. It would make him particularly heavy hearted if the threat had to do with Halloween (kinda "I knew the Satanic power in this day was no good, now here it comes to bite America") Could you BE a bigger dope?

Maybe he received an ultimatum from Saddam Hussein giving a deadline for the US to withdraw from Afganistan.
To: Carbon
I didn't like your sarcastic reply. Ashcroft probably knows a lot more then he can tell the American public, and it is probably taking a toll on him. It would be a lot worse if John Reno was still Attorney General.
Meanwhile Y2K worries will probably be a walk in the park when these ragheads get through with us - if they can.

BTW... These "let's chat about what's on TV" threads just bug me to no end. The thread goes up with the assumption that we're all currently watching the tube and that we already know what the post is supposed to be about. Then you have to wade through 100+ replies on multiple threads to try to put 2+2 together. Damn, I wish I could figure out how to get my preferences to reset.

I agree with you. I thought Ashcroft seemed concerned.

I Agree.
Ashcroft is obviously a Yankee fan.
