Netanyahu says West sent wrong message
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | 11/01/2001 | Andrew Sparrow

BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, former Israeli prime minister, criticised Tony Blair yesterday for calling for a Palestinian state.

He told an all-party meeting in the Commons that Mr Blair's comments had sent out the "wrong message" to terrorists.

Two weeks ago Mr Blair spoke in favour of a "viable Palestinian state" after meeting Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian leader.

As part of a concerted attempt to strengthen Arab support for military action in Afghanistan, President Bush made a similar statement.

Mr Netanyahu said: "Calls for the creation of a Palestinian state are misguided, especially at this time. They are misguided because, while this is not the goal of President Bush and Prime Minister Blair, it sends exactly the wrong message.

"The message received is that, if you kill thousands of Americans, you will be rewarded by American calls to reward terrorists."

Mr Netanyahu said the war on terrorism could be won, provided that the West kept its resolve.

"Today the terrorists have the will to destroy us but they do not have the power. We have the power to destroy them but we must also show that we have the will."

The terrorist groups were embroiled in a "deadly fantasy" which envisioned the destruction of Western society and its replacement with the "pre-medieval ideology" of militant Islamism, he said.

Not only show it. Finish the job.

I too thought this was a terrible time to even say the words Palestinian State. Once terrorism enters the picture, all options should be off the table for five years or so. An announcement to that effect would have been a much better move.

In the long run I recognize the need for and eventuality of a Palestinian state. But the Palestinians "absolutely have to show that they are capable of living by 21st century norms before their own state can even be discussed. EOS

I agree that any firm stance against terrorism must include support for the establishment of a new terrorist state.

LOL. Hardly. I DO have the wish that the world had more plain-talking men of conviction that were running this damn war. Lots of putz's around these days.

Yes, I agree that we need a terrorist state. It should be surrounded by a large gate, and filled with tombstones. It should also make any geiger counter within fifty miles go off the scale. Call me a romantic...

Where does Netanyahu get off dictating our foriegn policy. Do you honestly think there will ever be peace in the Middle East without a Palestinian State? I'm sick and tired of my tax dollars funding the State of Israel while they gun down unarmed innocent Palestinian children. It's time they fund their own tyranny and it's time they fight their own war.

Yes, I do.

I'm sick and tired of my tax dollars funding the State of Israel while they gun down unarmed innocent Palestinian children.

You mean the "innocent" children who were celebrating the murder of my countrymen?

It's time they fund their own tyranny and it's time they fight their own war.

Perhaps Israel should be left to its' own "devices". They would finish off the murderous, bloodthirsty Muslims better than we seem to be doing.

Propeganda and mischaracterization. He is not dictating American policy, he is just stating his opinion. If they are "gunning down" innocent people, it is rarely if at all intentional. However, the Palestinian and other Arab terrorists target high rises, pizza parlours, discotheques and shopping malls. These are intentional attacks against non combatants. Big difference. If the Palestinians attacked the tanks, troops and military bases, they would have more of a moral leg to stand on.

There should be a Palestinian state. There should be no Arafats. I will never support the creation of another brutal dictator terrorist state in the Arab world. A free, democratic and open Arab state that guaranteed and defended freedom of worship, free press, free speech, due process and universal sufferage I would welcome. But I won't hold my breath. No Arab leader would want such an example to be set, which is why they are all enemies of freedom and should never be trusted. They are the one's who put the Palestinians in camps in 1948. It is the Israelis who have been trying to negotiate their freedom. How ironic that you would blame the Israelis.

LOL. Yeah, he should be careful what he wishes for. Imagine if the USA didn't restrain Israel in 1956. Cairo would be the largest Israeli city. Imagine if the USA didn't restrain Israel in 1967. Damascus would be in ruins. Imagine if the USA didn't restrain Israel in Lebanon. Arafat and the PLO would be dead. Imagine if the USA didn't restrain Israel during the Gulf War. Baghdad would be a parking lot for rich Kuwaitis. All these wars were started by Arab aggressions, and all these wars were stopped by the USA preventing Israel from taking the necessary steps to prevent future wars.

In fact, American intervention against Israel has consistently caused more wars! By not allowing Israel to defeat Nassar in 1956, we only enabled him to attack again in 1967. By preventing Israel from destroying the PLO in Lebanon, the USA enabled the PLO to return to the west bank and cause another war there. By not allowing Israel to defeat Syria, the USA enabled Syria to remain a rogue nation that supports terrorism -- including murdering our Marines in Lebanon. By preventing Israeli retaliation against Saddam for scud attacks, the USA enabled him to supply the Anthrax that may be killing our citizens.

The Pan Arab fascists and brutal Arab despots should be grateful that the USA is able to keep Israel from giving them the punishment they so richly deserve.

"The message received is that, if you kill thousands of Americans, you will be rewarded by American calls to reward terrorists."

Or, more succinctly, you get what you pay for. And the US is trying to pay them handsomely for the murder of our people.

Gee, could it be possible they'll do it again when they want something???? (Bemused, just fell off the turnip truck look)
