Why we were caught off-guard

Some people are still wondering why and how the United States of America was caught off-guard by the terrorist attack of Sept. 11.

Let me explain.

Back in 1999, well after the first attack on the World Trade Center, after the Oklahoma City bombing and after the downing of TWA Flight 800, the Clinton administration's FBI put out a report on terrorism.

It was called Project Megiddo.

And it explained, in no uncertain terms, that right-wing Christian terrorists posed the gravest danger to the republic and were most likely to incite violence in the months and years ahead.

This was the mindset of the Clinton administration. Right-wing Christians were the perceived threat. They were the enemy. Islamicists got short shrift in the FBI report. Osama bin Laden was probably bent out of shape by the slight.

The Project Megiddo Report goes a long way toward explaining why the FBI went to great lengths to avoid seeing, hearing or touching any evidence of a Middle East connection in the Oklahoma City bombing. It explains why most Americans are unaware of the fact that Islamicist terrorist groups indeed claimed responsibility for downing TWA Flight 800 over Long Island Sound. It explains why the Clinton administration viewed the World Trade Center bombing as some sort of aberration that could be ignored, rather than allow it to serve as a warning of bigger things to come.

It's also worth recalling that while relaxing with a group of reporters after the 1996 elections, Bill Clinton said he owed his political revival to the Oklahoma City bombing. Think about that. Why was that so?

In 1994, Clinton was on the ropes politically. No one expected him to be re-elected. The Republicans had swept into power in both houses of Congress for the first time in a generation. But then that bomb went off.

"It broke a spell in the country as people began searching for common ground again," Clinton explained.

What did Clinton do? He blamed talk radio for broadcasting "a relentless clamor of hatred and division." He planned with the FBI a new anti-terrorist strategy with sweeping new powers.

Thus, the investigations of the Oklahoma City bombing, the TWA Flight 800 downing and the World Trade Center explosion all became politicized. Only evidence that led in one direction would be gathered and evaluated. Evidence that pointed to a conspiracy that pointed anywhere but to right-wing Christians would be ignored, discarded and covered up.

It seems unbelievable, but it's true.

Clinton's own Justice Department inspector general had to admit that the Oklahoma City bombing investigation offered one of the worst examples of de facto evidence tampering by the FBI crime labs.

The FBI had no scientific evidence for concluding the OKC bombing was the result of an ammonium nitrate fertilizer bomb. The Justice Department found that the explosives unit simply guessed that the bomb was made of 4,000 pounds of ammonium nitrate after the FBI found a receipt suggesting Terry Nichols had purchased that amount. No tests were conducted. No detonator was recovered.

There was no explanation offered for reports broadcast widely the day of the bombing that two other larger bombs were found unexploded in the Murrah Building. The FBI steadfastly refused – even to this day – to accept or examine evidence suggesting Nichols had contact with Islamic terrorists and that some were on the scene the day of the bombing.

Few paid any attention to the World Trade Center bombing trial, which brought to light evidence of a much broader Islamicist conspiracy.

Few media outlets bothered to tell the world of the Islamicist groups that claimed to have brought down TWA Flight 800.

Thus, the FBI put all of its terrorist eggs in one suspect political basket – the right-wing Christian basket. That's where the FBI focused its attention officially beginning in 1996, the record shows.

Is it any wonder why they missed the real terrorists? Is it any wonder why they looked in all the wrong places for all the wrong reasons? Is it any wonder that 5,000 to 6,000 Americans unnecessarily lost their lives as a result?

Let me conclude by saying Clinton bears a tremendous amount of responsibility for politicizing the FBI. But let me add that unless the current administration recognizes the deliberate frauds that were perpetrated on the American people, holds those responsible accountable and makes the necessary changes in the agency, it will be equally culpable.

And, more importantly, we will never solve the real problems of terrorism that are plaguing this country.

And they still are. I forgot about little ol' Project Megiddo, the end of millenium smear on 'right wingers.' Of course, a quick search of the FR archives quickly shows 100X the of terrorist activity was done by Mid-Eastern terrorists v. 'right wingers.'

There are six graphic visuals and one graphic series of sounds that will always remain with me, in relationship with the WTC terrorist acts.  Of course their are many, but these are the main ones.

Visuals

1. The visual of the plane hitting the first tower
2. The visual of the plane hitting the second tower
3. Photographs of people in mid-air on their way down
4. The first tower collapse
5. The second tower collapse
6. The visual of the people covered in debris exiting clouds of smoke
7. The piles of rubble

Sounds

1. The chirping of the motion detectors on the firemen.
 

We are indeed fortunate for at least a few things in relation to the investigation of the terrorism at the WTC.  There were plenty of video cameras around.  Eye witnesses suddenly became trustworthy again.  The federal government didn't think to blame everything on faulty wiring in the diesel tanks for the back-up generators.  And oh yes, Kahlstrom, Hall, that pinhead CIA agent and Clinton didn't have their hands in it.

Otherwise we'd have our token McVeigh and Nichols by now.  But then there's still time...

I don't know how they are going to do it, but I have a feeling in the pit of my stomach like they are going to pin something on some whacko right wing group.  After they've done so, you'll see quasi-conservatism linked.  And then we'll see how much effort is expended to explain tollerance regarding conservatives, to the good people of this nation.

References from Newsday, NYT, Reuters, Times Of London, CNN, Daily Telegraph, and Yossef Bodansky, e.g.:

Oh Joy. Here comes the man who wanted to spray civilians in traffic with .50 caliber machine gun fire, from helicopters, if it stopped one car chase.

If people like you didn't have their head up their a&&es, we might have stopped the WTC disaster. You are part of the problem.

Furthermore, Joesph told me something I didn't know prior to this article -- the news media suppressed it -- that an Islamic group CLAIMED GUILT for TWA 800.

The engines on the right side of the plane both suffered more damage than those on the left, Investigators have said the right side of the Boeing 747, near where the wings meet the fuselage, suffered the most smoke and fire damage.

The right inboard engine was relatively intact but suffered ``foreign object damage'' from debris sucked in while it was apparently still running.

A computer simulation of the final moments of Trans World Airlines Flight 800 has placed the blast that downed the plane in a small site on the jet's right side, The New York Times reported Friday. The simulation shows that almost everything in the first spray of metal, luggage and other material blown from the plane came from a confined area above and ahead of the right wing.

A safety board official told CNN Friday that investigators found "striking damage" to two seats in Row 23 on the right side of the plane; the two rows behind them -- 24 and 25 -- were missing. The row 26 seats were found. "There's no question that's interesting, but it does not get us to the end game," a federal investigator said.

A separate source identified the damaged seats as Nos. 9 and 10, the far right seats nearest the wing and over the center fuel tank. He described the damage as fist-sized holes in the steel-plated back supports. "There are holes in those seats," the source said. But, "there is no conclusion to be drawn from that evidence at this time." Rows 17 to 28 in the coach section of the doomed jetliner have been under intense investigative scrutiny for the past week or so because of fire damage where the passenger cabin meets the right wing.

Meanwhile, the mystery of what happened to TWA Flight 800 deepened Monday. Investigators who have examined the center wing box -- the area between the wings -- say it shows fire damage in some areas but not in others, sources told CNN's Carl Rochelle. Some of the fractures in the wing box have soot in them, while others do not, according to the sources. They said the finding suggests that a portion of the Boeing 747 may have broken before it burned in the July 17 explosion that brought down the jetliner.

Damage in the center section, where the metal bulges outward in some areas and dips inward in others, further puzzled investigators. Only one of the jumbo jet's three recovered engines shows fire damage, the sources said. Fans on the other two engines were intact when found and were not turning when the engines hit the water, the sources said. They said those two engines hit the water at a relatively "flat" angle, meaning they were moving forward -- not straight down.

Two rows of missing seats from the center of the jumbo jet could help pinpoint the location of the explosion that brought down the plane off New York's Long Island, killing all 230 people on board. As recovery efforts in the Atlantic Ocean continue, rows 24 and 25 on the right side of the Boeing 747 are still missing, a source who has seen wreckage recovered so far told CNN.

The missing rows are located just a few feet behind the front edge of the right wing, where the wreckage shows the greatest amount of fire damage. In rebuilding the jumbo jet in hopes of finding the cause of the crash, investigators have been concentrating on the midsection, from rows 17 to 28.

Referring to the seats in those 12 rows, Robert Francis, vice chairman of the NTSB, said Thursday they were more heavily damaged than other parts of the plane.

Two seats on the farthest right side of row 23 had fist-sized holes punched into their sheet metal back supports, sources told CNN Friday. Row 23 is directly in front of the missing rows.

Computer simulation Investigators are working with a computer simulation to try to recreate what happened when the plane was blown apart shortly after takeoff from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, an NTSB official confirmed. Such a simulation is standard in most crash investigations.

Investigators are looking closely at the engines, especially the third engine, which reportedly showed evidence of fire damage. In the Long Island hangar, investigators began tearing apart the No. 3 engine, the only one of the three recovered so far that shows fire damage. It's the engine closest to the fuselage on the right side.


Comment:

The distinct crash similarities of aircraft type, radar returns, wreckage plot, sudden short loud sound, abrupt power cut, fodded engines, inflight damage, missing bodies, torn off noses, and start place of damage qualify three aircraft into one class from which the deduction may be made that one unifying cause had the same effects.

Another accident with the same similarities except for a torn off nose and less wreckage may also be included in that class. The unifying cause for all four accidents is the inadvertent opening of the forward cargo door inflight. 27 Mar 97
