A UNIQUE manual for Islamic terrorists, detailing every aspect of how to fight a guerrilla war, from biochemical attacks to finding the fatal pressure point during hand-to-hand combat, has been obtained by western intelligence agencies.
The 7,000-page guide - entitled Encyclopaedia of Jihad - provides an insight into how terrorists from Osama Bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network operate in both urban environments and on the battlefield.
Filling 11 volumes and circulated both in book form and on CD-Rom to terrorist instructors, it offers guidance on how to inject frozen food with biochemical agents to create mass panic, rig up a door lock to explode when the handle is turned, and bring down a plane with a missile.
"This is an amazing document," said Roland Jacquard, head of the World Terrorism Observatory in Paris. "It gives us a very clear idea of what we are up against with Al-Qaeda and Bin Laden's followers throughout the world."
The encyclopaedia - extracts of which have been obtained by The Sunday Times - is dedicated to Bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam, a charismatic preacher who was a formative influence on the Saudi terrorist. It distils the experience of 10 years of guerrilla fighting against the Russians in Afghanistan and draws on stolen CIA and special services' handbooks.
The most chilling volume is the 11th, which deals with bioterrorism, which is on a separate CD-Rom. It explains how to disperse potentially lethal organisms and poisons, ranging from botulism and viral infections to anthrax and ricin, the highly toxic chemical used on the tip of an umbrella by a Bulgarian secret service agent to kill the dissident Georgy Markov in London in 1978.
It details targets such as water and food supplies, and advocates maximising public panic by poisoning medicine, thereby jeopardising treatment of the sick and injured. Sources of biological material include a list of countries that produce anthrax and a training camp in Pakistan where toxins are manufactured.
The encyclopaedia was found in 1999 in the home of Khalil Deek when he was arrested in connection with an alleged plot to bomb Jordan's main airport in the capital, Amman, on the eve of the millennium.
A university educated computer expert, Deek, who was born in the Israeli-occupied territories, had spent two years in Peshawar, Pakistan, where he told people he was compiling a CD-Rom on the writings of a well-known Muslim preacher.
Though he denied being part of the Al-Qaeda network, he shared a bank account with Abu Zubaydah, often described as Bin Laden's chief-of-staff.
Despite his connections, Deek was released by the Jordanian authorities in May this year after 17 months in prison. Officials said there was insufficient evidence to charge him, though it is known that he helped to decipher Al-Qaeda computer codes for investigators.

Surveillance of potential targets - with video cameras, still cameras and mini-microphones - is critical. And targets should be chosen to put pressure on the country to "stop it intervening or creating an obstacle to the jihad", according to Jacquard. They include:
The construction of booby- trapped explosive devices that would not be out of place in a James Bond film is explained in minute detail. One page, from the volume on explosives, shows how to turn a packet of cigarettes into a bomb.
"Steel plates with electric current are placed on the interior walls of the pack so that when the pack is pressed (such as being stepped on), the plates touch each other and therefore the electric circuit is complete," it states.
"This system is normally used in an empty pack thrown in front of the house where the targeted person lives, or just to create chaos in a particular area."
It goes on to detail how individual cigarettes can be primed with explosives as well as cigarette lighters, mattresses, chairs and even chocolate bars, toothpaste tubes and hairbrushes.

One section shows how to turn cameras into bombs. It was the method used to kill Ahmed Shah Masood, the leading Afghanistan opposition commander, two days before the September 11 attacks.
Two Arabs posing as television journalists exploded the bomb in their camera when they interviewed him. The blast killed Masood and one of the terrorists. The other was shot by Masood's bodyguards.
Besides analysing how Semtex can be used, the encyclopaedia contains instructions on the ingredients needed to make explosives, including innocuous substances bought from supermarkets.
It begins with the basic chemical compounds and then lays out the exact quantities to be combined. One suggestion even includes Nescafé coffee and sugar. "It is clearly the work of someone who is very familiar with chemistry," said one anti-terrorist expert. "It might be hard for a guerrilla in the field to follow the detailed instructions, but they are very accurate."
Each volume is comprehensive. In discussing timers, the section on explosives ranges from complex loop, tremor and tilting switches to cruder versions that can be made from mousetraps, clothes pegs or light switches.
Unlike other Islamic terrorist manuals, previously revealed in court papers, there is little religious direction in the encyclopaedia. Everything is presented factually, almost every page carries a diagram.
At least four of the chapters are devoted to the military, from showing how to create an assault gun in a field forge from metal scavenged from the battlefield to mounting an attack on combat vehicles.
Another section covers first aid, including how to prevent blood loss from wounds. Alongside are further diagrams demonstrating how to kill an opponent by pinching pressure points on the back of the neck and the windpipe.
The book outlines how bridges can be blown up using conventional military explosives. Last week America was put on high alert over the possibility of attacks on bridges such as the Golden Gate in San Francisco.
Other volumes teach typography, map reading and how to use the stars to work out your location. The importance of propaganda and misinformation is outlined, telling operatives of plans to "penetrate certain Arabic papers and also western ones". The aim is to sow trouble and confusion by spreading false rumours.
The sophistication of some parts of the manual has alarmed intelligence agencies, which have asked counter-terrorism experts given access to the document not to discuss or release key elements, particularly on bioterrorism.
Jacquard believes the document charts how Islamic terrorism has developed over the past decade, expanding beyond conventional, low-technology forms of attack. There are now different types of terrorist. "The first is psychologically and intellectually weak and is used to stage such 'classic' attacks as car bombings, hijackings and kidnappings," he said.
"Recruits who fit a second, stronger profile are referred to as God's Brigade by those returning from Afghan training camps and are destined for operations such as suicide attacks and bioterrorism."

In the interim, they're sending new fresh-faced recruits to start on their flying lessons, learn to drive a truck, study microbiology and chemistry and engineering (courtesy of our tax dollars and a few stolen credit cards). A thousand arrests have prohibited some actions, surely, but we still need to be more pro-active than reactive.
And fer cryin' out loud, can't we have somebody be a little creative in the attempt to extract some info from the goons already in custody? If school children knew about 9-11 before it happened, there have got to be plenty of people in the know about other planned actions. Wouldn'tcha think????
They specify frozen food. No mention of fresh food although it's a possibility, I suppose. I wonder if the state of being frozen helps maintain the stability of certain biochemical agents.
Good question. I'm guessing a few things. Frozen food probably stays around longer on the store shelves and isn't inspected the way fresh food (I.E. meat) is inspected. But this is a very weak theory. It all depends on where the point of insertion is I guess.
You're right. I haven't reread the story to see if it mentioned this, but I can't imagine the CIA or whoever didn't have this document in their hands prior to 9-11.

Osama's encyclopaedia makes for a chilling reading
Most of the information can be gleaned from internet sites, experts say, and another manual, written for Muslim operatives abroad and not part of the 11-volume set, was discovered last year during an investigation of bin Laden. But intelligence analysts from two Western countries who read part of the "Manual of Afghan Jihad", and who spoke on condition of anonymity, said its highly technical detail, including diagrams, represents a new level of sophistication in the training apparatus of bin Laden’s network. The volumes were obtained by The Associated Press from a former Afghan guerrilla who said he got them from a Libyan fighter. He said the Libyan, who had fallen out with his comrades, stole them in July from the headquarters of bin Laden’s organisation in Kandahar, also the home base of Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers.
The preface to Mouswada al Jihad al Afghani, the Arabic name of the manual, says it was compiled by The Services Office Of The Training Camps, and that this Services Office was founded by bin Laden. It is meant for use in the battle against "the enemies of our movement, the enemies of Allah, for any Islamic group". Each volume begins with dedications to, among others, bin Laden, who "took part in jihad with his life and money in Afghanistan…; Abdullah Azzam, a Palestinian killed during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan; Islamic leaders in Afghanistan; and the people and government of Pakistan, which has long supported the Taliban regime.
The 11 volumes, ranging from 250 to 500 pages each, are written in Arabic, with occasional indexes in English. Excerpts were translated for AP. Each has a specific area of expertise. "What’s your desire?" the text asks, then takes the reader step by step through the acquiring and mixing various explosive materials. Other sections tell how to blow up a plane, engage an armoured vehicle, surround an airport, spy on a military base. A volume on hand-to-hand combat has a chapter on "how to threaten with a knife, piercing with a knife". In the September 11 terror attacks in the US, in which bin Laden is the suspected mastermind, hijackers were believed to have been armed with knives or box-cutters.
In the chapter on security and intelligence, the authors say that "in preparedness for war, security and intelligence-gathering of the enemy’s power and strategy have been emphasised, according to the instructions of the Quran". In a chapter on "basic sabotage and destruction", would-be assassins are offered various options, including "poison-making, poisonous gases and poisonous drugs". They are instructed on specific plant life that can be used to make poison gas, how to make the gas, and what quantity is needed to kill a man. They are told that a room full of a particular odourless gas will kill someone in 30 seconds.
The "armaments section" leads the reader through a virtual history of 20th Century weaponry, from British Lee-Enfield rifles of 1928 vintage to the US-made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles supplied to the anti-Soviet rebels in the 1980s. The first aid section offers advice on dealing with everything from bee-stings and electric shocks to brain haemorrhages and typhoid. "This research is for all Mujahideen (holy warriors) in the world who are struggling to establish Islamic law wherever they are," says one passage in the manual. "According to the Quran, you should fully prepare yourselves to fight with your enemies. So, wherever the Mujahideen are fighting, their training in explosives is necessary." A volume on tactics urges the faithful "to adopt the path of jihad according to the teachings of Islam against the un-Islamic and satanic states, as well as against those Muslim states where true Islam has not been introduced".
The former guerrilla who gave AP the manual retains close ties with some of the estimated 4,000 Arab fighters in Afghanistan, and he requested anonymity. According to the Afghan, the camps to which the manuals were supposed to be delivered are Al Badr I and II in eastern Afghanistan. The two camps were targeted with 70 US Tomahawk cruise missiles in 1998 in retaliation for bin Laden’s suspected role in the bombing of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Abu Bakr Aqeedah. Egyptian. Killed during a military operation against the Russians in Dagestan, Russia, on 22 December 1997, Aged 36. 1st Hand Account.
'One Leg is Better than Two.'
On the 22nd of December 1997, the foreign Mujahideen in Chechnya under the command of Ibn-ul-Khattab led an attack on a Russian Army Base in Dagestan. This attack was successful, Praise be to Allah and claimed the life of one brother, who to the Mujahideen was widely loved and respected. The name of this brother was Abu Bakr Aqeedah. The following article details Abu Bakr's career in Jihad and how he was killed. May Allah accept him from amongst the Shuhadaa'.
"But as for those who are killed in the Way of Allah, never will Allah allow their deeds to be lost." [Quran, Surah Muhammad (47), Verse 4]
Abu Bakr graduated from High School in Egypt, obtaining a very high mark, and was awarded a scholarship for further education. He then commenced a five-year Batchelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his studies, he became interested in working for Islam and met the likes of Dr. Sheikh Omar Abdur-Rahman, under whom he studied Islam for approximately two years. The oppressive Egyptian regime soon imprisoned him for a period sufficient to ban him from Egyptian Military Service (all Islamists are prohibited from participating in National Service in Egypt).
After he graduated, in the late 1980s, he left for the Jihad in Afghanistan, at the age of 25. He stayed there fighting the enemy and defending Muslim land, gaining military experience to add to his technical expertise. One-and-a-half years later, he lost one of his legs below the knee, when he stepped on a mine during an operation in Jalalabad. One brother who was with him when he lost his leg, describes:
"When the operation began against the Communists, we soon came under heavy fire and bombardment from the enemy forces. All of us had our heads down and we were not able to get up to even look, due to the severity of the firing. Abu Bakr, who was one of the senior commanders of the operation, then asked one of the brothers to go and get a mortar bomb. None of the brothers were able to go, so Abu Bakr went himself to get it. He returned after about half-an-hour with a mortar shell in his hand. He then asked the other brothers to load and fire it. When they asked him why he did not do it himself, he replied that he had been shot in his arm by a bullet that passed straight through the bone of his arm, when he went to get the shell. We asked him to go back to have his injury seen to, but he refused, preferring to continue fighting.
Soon afterwards, with his rifle in one hand, Abu Bakr stepped on an anti-personnel mine, that severed his leg from below the knee. I carried him back from the Front-Line to the ambulance, and accompanied him to the hospital in Peshawar. By the time we arrived at the hospital some hours later, he had lost of a lot of blood and was exhausted. Sweat was coming out of his face like water, but he was not moaning or groaning: only mentioning Allah's name. I said to him, 'Be patient my brother. This is the way to Paradise.' He nodded his head and murmured, 'I know.'"
After a temporary artificial leg was fitted to his body, he returned to Afghanistan and continued to fight and train the brothers there. He did not leave the Jihad after losing his leg, even though he now had legitimate excuse that many of us do not have, but the love of Jihad was now deeply ingrained in his heart and he wanted the rest of his body to reach where his leg had reached. Amongst other training camps, he was a military trainer in the camp of Shaheed Sheikh Abdullah Azzam (R.A.) for two years. Hundreds upon hundreds of Mujahideen received training under him. Soon after losing his leg, he was in the Central Mosque of Peshawar, to which Sheikh Abdullah Azzam was making his way to deliver the Friday sermon, before he was assassinated along the route.
Some months later, he got married. He telephoned his family back in Egypt and told them of his desire to get married. His family searched, and found an Egyptian sister willing to marry him, so they sent her to Afghanistan to join him, bearing in mind that this was AFTER he had lost his leg. How many 'sisters' in the West would refuse a marriage proposal from a Mujahid, just because their hearts have become attached to the love of material things. So this sister arrived in Afghanistan, and they married there.
Abu Bakr continued to fight in Afghanistan until the Soviets were expelled in 1989.When the Communists were defeated as well, he proceeded with Ibn-ul-Khattab and a handful of other brothers, to Tadjikistan, and fought there for some time. When activities in Tadjikistan subsided, he finally proceeded to Chechnya to join Ibn-ul-Khattab, who had arrived there a little earlier. Two years he stayed in Chechnya, participating in all the numerous military operations with Ibn-ul-Khattab, including those which earned Khattab the nickname, 'The Lion of Chechnya.'
After the temporary peace deal was signed in Chechnya in the Autumn of 1996, Abu Bakr continued to learn and to train Mujahideen. Ibn-ul-Khattab offered to pay for Abu Bakr to travel to the West to have a quality artificial leg fitted, as his present one was now many years ago and giving him inconvenience. Abu Bakr, however, refused, saying that it was not worth spending the money of the Muslims on someone like him, when other people and other causes were more worthy of being spent upon.
In the early hours of Monday morning, 22 December 1997, Abu Bakr Aqeedah participated in an attack on a Russian Army Base in Buinaksk, Dagestan with his artificial leg. He was killed during the first few minutes of the operation, whilst he was facing the enemy, not fleeing from them. He was aged 36. He had attained the prize of Shahadah (martyrdom) after spending eleven years (one third of his life) in Jihad for the Pleasure of Allah. We ask Allah (SWT) to reward him for his efforts and to enter him into the highest part of His Paradise.
If you ever met Abu Bakr, you would be impressed by his character immediately without even knowing who he was. His residence was simple and sparsely furnished, his manner was humble and he spoke dignified Arabic, not gutter slang, and was very hospitable.
The aspect of this brother which was most impressive was his vast knowledge coupled with his humility. He was chosen out of ALL the Mujahideen in Afghanistan to write the sections on explosives in the famous Arabic nine-volume Afghanistan 'Encyclopaedia of Jihad'. He was once jokingly referred to as the 'most wanted and dangerous man in Chechnya' by commanders like Ibn-ul-Khattab, Shamil Basayev and Salman Raduyev. He lived in the same village, possibly next door, to Abu Talal Qasimi (an Egyptian Islamic scholar who was kidnapped by the Croats on route to Bosnia in 1995 and sent to Egypt, where he was probably tortured to death). As for his family, he had about 5-6 brothers, all of whom were either killed in Jihad or imprisoned by the tyrannical Egyptian regime.
Even though Abu Bakr was known and regarded by the Mujahideen as one of the most knowledgeable and experienced commanders in the world, his skills and expertise did not leave with him. In addition to the Encyclopaedia of Jihad, Abu Bakr also completed a thesis on 'Operational Tactics and their Effectiveness' based on all the military operations undertaken by the foreign Mujahideen in Chechnya, a few weeks before he was killed. All his writings now circulate amongst Mujahideen commanders all over the world.
His modesty was such that this little information was gleaned from hours of conversation, but mainly conversations with other Mujahideen. His name as Abu Bakr Aqeedah was unusual. When asked, "Why Aqeedah?", he replied, "Why 'Egyptian' or 'Syrian', etc? I am a Muslim first and foremost so I want to be known as Abu Bakr Aqeedah, not by any other name."
It is difficult to write this article on Abu Bakr: mere words cannot describe him. Unless one actually sat with him, talked to him, asked him about his dreams, ate with him and lived with him, it is not possible to truly understand his character, or the significance of his loss to the Mujahideen all over the world, as a brother and a friend.
Abu Bakr leaves behind him his wife and four young daughters in Chechnya. We ask Allah to make their life easy in this World and to join them with Abu Bakr in Paradise in the Hereafter.
Indeed we sincerely ask Allah from the bottom of our hearts to accept Abu Bakr Aqeedah in Paradise as a Shaheed, to make him from the best of them, and that Allah grants us the steadfastness to continue the Jihad as Abu Bakr did.
O' Allah! We know your promise that we will be raised up on the Day of Judgement with those whom we love, so on that Day, permit us to be raised up with the Shuhadaa' and the Mujahideen, and make Abu Bakr among them.
O' Abu Bakr! We have not forgotten the cold, dark, rainy nights under enemy bombardment that you patiently endured in Afghanistan, whilst we were enjoying comfort in our homes.
O' Abu Bakr! We have not forgotten the harsh Chechen winters that you passed without complaint, whilst we were relaxing in fully-heated dwellings.
O' Abu Bakr! The land of Afghanistan has not forgotten those parts of it on which your blood was split when you were injured in Allah's Way, whilst many of us did not even spend a single drop of blood in the Land of Jihad.
O' Abu Bakr! We have not forgotten the day when sweat was pouring down your face like water, hours after you had sold your leg to Allah, but you did not complain, knowing that this was the way to Paradise; whilst many of us did not even expend a single drop of sweat in the Land of Jihad.
O' Abu Bakr! You have placed in the hearts of your brothers, a wound that will not be healed except by joining you.
O' Abu Bakr! The eyes send their tears and the heart is full of grief, but we do not say anything except that which please our Lord. We ask Allah that we will meet you in Paradise, and that your life will serve as an inspiration for all Muslim youths, or any Muslim man who has blood in his veins, who wishes to leave the humiliation of living in servitude to the disbelievers, to a life of Servitude to Allah, who feels the humiliation of the Muslims throughout the world as one of a man who truly responded to the Call of Allah until he was true to Allah and Allah was true to him (we ask Allah that it is so). Ameen.
"Those who answered the call of Allah and His Messenger even after injury had afflicted them, for those of them who did good deeds and were righteous, there is a great reward. Those unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, 'Verily, the people have gathered against you (a great army), so fear them.' But it only increased them in Faith and they said, 'Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs.'"

The Encyclopaedia of Jihad, or holy war, running into 11 volumes and produced by the Al-Qaeda network of Saudi exile Osama bin Laden, makes for a chilling how-to read on what the group calls the "basic rules of sabotage and terror." The volumes were acquired by The Associated Press from a disgruntled Libyan fighter, who said he stole them from the headquarters of bin Laden's fighters in Kandahar, also the home base of Afghanistan's Taliban rulers.
Most of the information is available on the Internet, experts say. But the compilation, and the commentary accompanying it, provides a glimpse of the inner workings of the organisation accused of carrying out the world's worst terror attack, the coordinated strikes of September 11 in the United States.
The preface explains that the training manuals were compiled in preparation for the battle against "the enemies of our movement, the enemies of Allah, for any Islamic group."
Groups plotting terror attacks, it admonishes, "have to think of a new security environment so they are able to face our enemies in all fields." Each volume begins with the same set of dedications: To Osama bin Laden, who "took part in jihad with his life and money in Afghanistan. He is the one who is still inducing the young mujahideen for jihad."
Other dedications are to Abdullah Azzam, an Egyptian who was killed during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, and to the leaders of the Islamic jihad in Afghanistan, to those who produced and translated the training manuals; and finally, to the people and government of Pakistan.
Pakistan, which has allied itself with the United States in the confrontation over bin Laden, is described as having given permission to "use their territory despite immense pressure from our enemies." The dedication adds, "We pray God to save Pakistan from any unforeseen danger."
The 11 volumes - written in Arabic, with the occasional index in English, and translated for the AP - each have a specific area of expertise. For example, one is devoted to explosives: making them, and setting them off.
Religious exhortations are scattered throughout the texts - "This research is for all mujahideen in the world who are struggling to establish Islamic law wherever they are," says one passage.
"According to the Quran, you should fully prepare yourselves to fight with your enemies. So wherever the mujahideen are fighting, their training in explosives is necessary."

Analysts from two Western countries who read some of the volumes said although much of information is widely available elsewhere the detailed volumes represent a new level of sophistication in Al-Qaeda's training apparatus.
The books were to be delivered to bin Laden camps called Al Badr I and Al Badr II, which were targeted with 70 US Tomahawk cruise missiles in 1998 in retaliation for bin Laden's suspected role in the bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, that killed 224 people.
A volume on tactics urges the faithful "to adopt the path of jihad according to the teachings of Islam against the un-Islamic and satanic states, as well as against those Muslim states where true Islam has not been introduced."
Other volumes offer instruction on first aid and light weaponry. Another is devoted to tanks - their history, use and maintenance.
In its report on global terrorism produced earlier this year, the US State department called Afghanistan a hub of terrorism.
Western observers say there are an estimated 10,000 fighters for terrorist groups in Afghanistan - an estimated 4,000 of them from Arab countries, the rest Pakistanis, Uzbeks and Chechens.
It's going to be long and bloody, exterminating these hell-bent insane death cultists.
