116 prince street, nyc - 212.334.6684 - info@hereisnewyork.org - open: tues to sun 11-6
about us
In response to the World Trade Center tragedy, and to the unprecedented flood of images that have resulted from it, a unique exhibition and sale of photographs is running in Soho on the ground floor of 116 Prince Street, NYC 10012, until Christmas Eve 2001

HERE IS NEW YORK is not a conventional gallery show. It is something new, a show tailored to the nature of the event, and to the response it has elicited. The exhibition is subtitled "A Democracy of Photographs" because anyone and everyone who has taken pictures relating to the tragedy is invited to bring or ftp their images to the gallery, where they will be digitally scanned, archivally printed and displayed on the walls alongside the work of top photojournalists and other professional photographers. All of the prints which HERE IS NEW YORK displays will be sold to the public for $25, regardless of their provenance. The net proceeds will go to the Children's Aid Society WTC Relief Fund, for the benefit of the thousands of children who are among the greatest victims of this catastrophe.

The causes and effects of the events of 9/11/2001 are by no means clear, and will not be for a very long time. What is clear, though, is this: in order to restore our sense of equilibrium as a nation, as a city, and particularly as a community, we need to develop a new way of looking at and thinking about history, as well as a way of making sense of all of the images which continue to haunt us.

HERE IS NEW YORKinvites anyone, amateur or professional, who has images connected to the World Trade Center disaster to make them a part of the exhibition. Our intention is to display the widest possible variety of pictures from the widest possible variety of sources, believing as we do that the World Trade Center disaster and its aftermath has ushered in a new period in our history, one which demands that we look at and think about images in a new and unconventional way. In keeping with HERE IS NEW YORK's democratic and populist nature, which we feel is not only appropriate to what has happened but intrinsic to its understanding, we are setting only the following limitation on submissions. All pictures must relate to the events of 9/11/2001, in the broadest and yet most intimate sense.

HERE IS NEW YORK HERE IS NEW YORK is also assisting the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) to evaluate the structural performance of the WTC buildings through photographs and videos taken during the course of September 11 and 12. Your contributions will be of great assistance.

I was made aware of this website via email. I have not been able to actually look at all the pictures that are located here, since there are so many. And since the funds raised here appear to go to a good cause, I thought it was worth repeating here on Free Republic.

We will never forget.

God bless each and everyone of you this Thanksgiving Day!

May God in Heaven bless you and your family, and especially all those in New York City, as well as the families from the Pentagon tragedy and every plane that crashed.

Lord we are thankful that you gave us this country. Let us do with what you have blessed us, within and without, so that we can help to move both this country and the world forward from this day on. We thank you for your bounty. Amen

"a democracy of photographs"

What? What does that mean?

I swear, artists give artists a bad name.

There are some nice shots in there though. >:)

Interesting....in the 1700+ photos, there's only one shot of people falling to their deaths....and there's no shots of anyone that's seriously injured or dead.  Not that I was looking for any photos like that but, around the 800th picture, awareness of the absence of these types of photos  sort of welled-up from my sub-conscious.  I couldn't help but notice how sanitized the gallery is.

The most tragic aspect of the attack is all but totally ignored...in 1700+ photos there's only one picture that deals directly with death.

But there's plenty of shots of the "peace" marchers.

I find it rather opportunistic for these folks to be selling photos that should be public record anyway. If you'll note, at the top of the page they are asking for donated photos to augment their photo database.

Anotherwords, we're not talking about photographers who need to support themselves. We're talking about an agency that is trying to make a buck. And after all the funds that have already been raised, and the pittance that has found it's way to the victim's relatives, I'm not willing to send one more dime to a "charity".

Sorry, I don't see this as a valid fundraiser for the victims. I see this as a way for the site managers to make a buck.

Could be. I still enjoyed the photos. With all the controversy around the fund raising, I would hard pressed to give to anyone "claiming" to be in support of the victims, without knowing my funds were going (@90%+) directly to the victims and then know how.

I agree with you.

I kind of thought that $25 per photo seemed a bit high as well... and the photo's are donated? sheesh! Something does seem a bit a-stray with this site, you are right.

I think we're more than willing to donate to a good cause, especially in support of our fellow Americans who've suffered great losses. I really do rebel against the idea of opportunists using this for personal gain. More than one billion dollars will be raised for the families of the 2500 to 4000 victims. I may be wrong, but IMO that's enough to cover what would be reasonable interum funding for them, if it's administered properly.

You are correct ... sanitization is NOT what is needed. We need to remember the horror of this day forever. Sanitization is what the Nazi sympathizers want us to do to the holocast, to whipe it from our memory. We won't, we shouldn't and we won't do the same here either ... excellent review... based on your feedback, I imagine we won't see any of the following pics on this website then .. so let's make sure we remember them here.
