'Witchcraft' Murders Cast A Gruesome Spell

In his mind's eye, the image of what Jose Antonio Serra saw in a burned patch of jungle on the Amazon's edge is still chillingly fresh -- not because the murder happened just seven weeks ago, but because there are some things a father can never forget.

What he found, a short walk from his family's mud hut, were the remains of his 13-year-old son: a figure on its knees, head buried in the dirt, genitals and middle figure removed with cuts that looked almost surgical. In shock, Serra noticed an odd detail: The mutilated body looked diminished, even shrunken. Then he noticed the gash in the boy's jugular vein, and realized that his blood had been drained.

Catholic FYI,

Steven Greydanus' "Now Playing" audio movie review program was just archived on Catholic Answers. It's the 11/16 program They're discussing HP, LOTR and Monsters, Inc.

Yikes. Limb lopping and blood drinking in a childrens' book. Thanks for the truth on this dangerous trash. The media hype Harry Potter as cutesy, wholesome stuff; they're conveniently neglecting to inform the public of the dark side.

Some quick questions:
  1. Do you believe that the Harry Potter books influenced the individual(s) committing these gruesome crimes?
  2. What is the official Catholic response to the Harry Potter books?
  3. What is your objective in posting and creating so many Harry Potter threads?
  4. Have you read the Harry Potter books yourself?

If you’ve already answered these questions somewhere else a link or URL would suffice. Thank you for your time.

But we're not talking about real Wiccans, are we. We're talking about Harry Potter. Go ahead, get a wand with a feather from a phoenix (the fact that phoenixes don't exist shouldn't stop you; just go on the net, right?) and levitate something.

If reading Harry Potter causes children to try to become real witches, we should have some evidence of that by now, since millions have read the books. Show me some statistics, show me some facts. More hits on occult websites is not sufficient; idle curiosity could easily account for that.

Another thing to consider is the short attention span children have. Today's big fad is tomorrow's gatherer of dust. Remember Cabbage Patch dolls? The kids don't.

Inasmuch as they impair normal body function and health. So the answer is, kinda. In a small way

Didnt some of the apostles have tattoos?

You will never convince me, nor many people that vasectmy, tubal ligation, using a condom or birth control pills is satanic and a sure path to hell.

Phantom Lord is funnier. He's not so over-the-top.

I wasnt trying to be funny, nor was I being sarcastic. I was serious and asked for serious answers. Which you provided.

Read the bible. I don't recall any middle ground.

Thats my point. Not everyone believes in the bible. And you will never convince me that because one doesnt follow the bible that they are doomed to hell. You will never convince me that my wife is going to hell for the sole reason that she is Jewish and doesnt follow Jesus or the bible.

Do you agree with Jerry Falwell that gays and lesbians are at fault for Sept. 11th? And don't say he didt say it. He did. He directly pointed the finger of blame.

If anything else, these books are a huge cultural phenomenone, and should be the subject of intense scrutiny by Christians.

I would agree with you there. And I have scrutinized the books - I've read all four. Have you?

Are you at least willing to concede that we've taken the same information and come to different conclusions? I respect your decision not to read them or have your children read them.

All I've ever wanted was the same respect without being told I was sending my kids to hell (and I don't think you have ever said that).

Yup, that's the way it is. I wonder if any of us would be willing to sacrifice our children? Unfortunately, many of them are doing that--sacrificing them to the god of this world by neglect, bad choices, poor parenting. Sad, isn't it? And they call us whackos. Love, M

There aren't any unicorns anywhere.

And here's why.

The Unicorn

(Words and music by Shel Silverstein)

A long time ago when the earth was green,
There were more kinds of animals than you'd ever seen.
They'd run around free when the ark was bring born,
But the loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.

There were green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants, But sure as you're born
The loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.

Now God seen some sinning and it gave him pain.
And he says, "Stand back, I'm gonna make it rain."
He says, "Hey Brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do,
Build me a floating zoo."

And take some of them green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants, But sure as you're born,
Don't you forget my Unicorn.

Old Noah was there to answer the call.
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started falling.
He marched in the animals, two by two
And he called out as they went through.

Hey Lord, I got your green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But Lord, I'm so forlorn, I just can't see no Unicorns.

Then, Noah looked out through the driving rain,
Them Unicorns were hiding, playing silly games,
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring.
Oh, them silly Unicorns.

There were green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Noah cried, "Close the door cause the rain is pouring,
And we just can't wait for no Unicorns"

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tides.
Them Unicorns looked up from their rocks and they cried,
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away.
And, that's why you've never seen a Unicorn to this very day.

You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But sure as you're born,
You're never gonna see a Unicorn.

Which one? I've told the uncomfortable truth in a number of posts here.

#36, not because it contained any "uncomfortable truth" but because it was ignorant and blasphemous.
