A Disgraceful Blocking of Nominees

A Nov. 13 Letter to the Editor ("Democrats Work Hard to Process Nominations") from Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, compels a more complete and factual account of the current state of the judicial confirmation process.

Sen. Leahy seeks to rebut growing criticism that his Judiciary Committee is blocking qualified judicial nominees selected by President Bush. The criticism is warranted, and the issue is of extreme importance. The Senate's inexcusable inaction on dozens of qualified judicial nominees threatens to further clog already overburdened courtrooms, delay justice for millions of Americans and, even more alarming, make it harder for federal law-enforcement officials to get judicial assistance in their efforts to track and monitor suspected terrorists and other criminals.

I think that Bush and Ashcroft should list all the liberal laws that will not be enforced until the judgeships are filled to 80 percent, 90 percent and 100 percent levels.

These guys need incentive. If the judges are going to be empty, lets cut back on useless laws until we get the judges to try the cases.

Excellent letter!

But what's more, I detect the hidden hand of Karl Rove behind this letter. This is a direct assault by all Republican members on Leahy's leadership, or lack thereof, of the Judiciary Committee. This is coordinated, not something Republican legislators are known for.

Methinks this reflects Bush's thinking and his actions without the direct imprint of Bush. Soften Leahy up by an assault by his own colleagues, have the White House hit him later while he's on the defensive.

Be Seeing You,

Chris
