A national ID card offers no protection .In order for it to be of any benefit it would have to be checked and followed..

We already had a paper trail in place for the terrorists called visa's..and no one checked them. Even today there are expired visa holders being allowed to stay here for hearings for a very late extention.

This is a new form of governmental terrorism "show me your papers please" will be asked of law abidding citizens, while the illigals continue to be grated citizenship rights they do not have.

I do not give my phone number, social security number or drivers license # to anyone to transact business. No one needs that information..

Extremely weak reply there, Darth.

Alright, let me re-emphasize my point:

It is way past "that time". But to say anymore would probably violate the terms of use of FreeRepublic.com. As this is JimRob's place, I wanna be extra careful what I articulate here.

Do a search for some of Claire's other work and you'll see where I'm driving at.

WELL WRITTEN. PLAUSIBLE. CERTAIN GIVEN THE BIBLICAL PROPHECIES. . .

But we certainly don't have to aid and abet as well as speed the process.

Thanks for the ping-- I don't see the need for a national ID at this point.

Please give me an idea of what you would require to occur when the need for National I.D. would help Freedom in America.

To be honest, I struggle to find a circumstance under which a national ID can be rationalized, especially as long as there is no system in place to make sure they are not misused by those who would print up fake ones, steal someone's national ID, etc.

I wouldn't say there is absolutely no scenario that warrants a national ID but I can't come up with one right now so I'd have to oppose a national ID.

So what's an individual to do? I started this year as a die-hard republican mainstream-type person, and I find myself slipping more to a republic of texas-style paranoid anti-establishment type. Is that the way to fix things? Break away and rebel? I'm a pudgy, out-of-shape computer geek -- how the hell can I make a change?

Since I was pinged into this thread, I'll add my two cents.

First on the census: This is an abomination that every patriot should oppose with nonviolent, passive civil disobedience. I got the long form for 2000 and threw it into the trash. When Mr. Census Man came to my house, I told him how many were living there (to fulfill the intent of the Constitution) and then politely but firmly told him that was all the information I would give. I did not let him into the house. Technically, what I did was against the law, but it is unlikely that they would or will do anything about it. I'm ashamed of anyone who says he or she values freedom but gives the census more than that.

On low-water toilets: This is a major pain in ... well you know. We have a rule in our house that when you go #2, you have to flush immediately, then one or two (or three) additional times depending on how much TP you use. That way, you're sure to use more water than a regular toilet; and as a side benefit, the toilet won't clog. Another form of nonviolent, passive resistance.

When the government comes to get something from you that used to be legal but now isn't -- gold (used to be illegal for individuals to own, may be illegal again), certain types of firearms, high-capacity magazines, certain types of knives or swords, etc. -- don't volunteer that you have them and don't voluntarily hand them in.

If a "National ID" comes along (and some say it has already in the form of your Driver's License or SS# or whatever), we can think up some nonviolent, passive ways to throw monkey wrenches into that also.

For other things, it's a much tougher call. As Chairman Mao said, "Power flows from the barrel of a gun." The government may not have all the guns (yet), but they have more and better guns, and they will make your life hell (if not kill you outright) if you try to make an armed stand for your privacy or whatever right you thought you had. Most of us need to think not only about ourselves, but about the welfare of our families and especially children. For the sake of that, we have to put up with a lot. (But what about the world our children will live in? See my final thought.)

A final thought: We tend to focus on the politicians and bureaucrats who seem intent on taking our freedoms away, little by little. "It's for your welfare." "It's for your safety." "It's for the children." But the real problem is not the politicians, it's the large fraction of our society who don't care about their freedoms as much as we do. While we may not like to face it, the people are getting what they want. We talk mainly to each other on this forum, and we disagree about a lot of things, but I believe that everyone here is far more interested in preserving his or her liberty than the average man or woman on the street. It seems to be worse now than when I was young (I grew up in the 50's and 60's), possibly due to the rise in single mothers who are looking to the government for the security they can't get from the absent fathers. Until we can turn that trend around, political action will at best only slow down the gradual erosion of freedom.

I'm familiar with Wolfe's work. I jusut found it disappointing that all you could say in response to a well-plotted argument against a national biometric identification system is innuenedo about female body chemistry. Surely if you're in favor of such a system you can refute her points using, say, facts.

You and I did EXACTLY the same thing regarding the census. The man said that he would have to go to the County Offices to get the information about my home. I said fine. He said he would have to look at the voter registrations to get the names. I said fine. He said he would have to go to the I.R.S. to get the income and I said fine. When he was done moaning I gave him a copy of The U.S.Constitution and suggested he study it.

I gently lead neighbors and friends into discussions about loosing freedom and liberty. Making them aware of what is happening to us. They have come back to me with stories about discussions they have had with local politicians and how they educated these people. Some of them have actually taken the time to speak to the City Council about freedom and liberty. So, I guess just educating people to what has happened over the past 50 years is the key to keeping freedom and liberty.

I can imagine what the Legislature would do if 1000 or 25,000 men and women started marching around their offices with rifles in their hands carrying signs "Obey the Constitution Not the U.N." I think this would open their eyes that to the fact we are not willing to become slaves of socialism.

PATRIOTS are "Counter-Revolutionaries" trying to prevent the government of the United States from overthrowing the Constitution of the United States. - Unknown Author
