PARIS (ANP) - Richard Reid, the man detained after he attempted to blow up a plane from American Airlines, got his shoe-bomb 14 december in Amsterdam. This was reported by the French newspaper Le Parisien after being informed by the French police.

Reid, that has got a Jamaican father and an English mother, was overpowered saturday during a flight from Paris to Miami. In his shoe were powderlike explosives, that after investigation could not have caused much damage.

According to the French newspaper Reid was in Brussels from 7 until 14 december, where he aquired a new passport. He traveled from Amsterdam to Paris by train on 16 december. The next day he bought, for about 2,000 US dollars, a ticket to Antigua through Miami. Until he boarded the plane saturday, he stayed four nights in a hotel at the Gare du Nord in the French capital.

Reid has been jailed multiple times for theft and mugging, according to the Britich newspaper The Times. In prison he converted to islam. He regulary visited a mosque in Brixton in South-London, where the Frenchman Zacaria Moussaoui also went to. This Moussaoui is suspected to have aided the 11 september attacks in the US.

"In his shoe were powderlike explosives, that after investigation could not have caused much damage."

From post #14 on This thread:

This was posted yesterday by someone from a German website and repeated in a few other posts.

Downright scary. 200 grams of semtex is about 7 onces, which by reports was about what was contained in the shoes.

This is what about 200 grams of Semtex will do to a pressurized (9 PSI to simulate 30000 Ft) 747! source: "AW&ST"

I'm not at all sure I'd call this "not much damage."
