Once again the small minded have leapt to the defence of Christianity and morality without stopping to find out what is going on.

In American Culture (which does matter BTW) this crap is disgusting. So if craping on your neighbors lawn is acceptable in say France - does that mean that people here should not find it digusting. In some cultures canabalism is still acceptable - would that be okay too Mr. Serpent of nine.

"Unfortunately, there are intolerant people who are offended by any little thing," Josep Maria Joan, director of the Toy Museum of Catalonia.

Unfortunately, "tolerance" is never allowed for religious viewpoints, unless one is a muslim.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE DONATES POOPER-SCOOPER TO NAPA, CALIFORNIA MUSEUM, COPIA

Featured at an exhibition at COPIA: The American Center for Wine, Food & the Arts, is a display of figurines that depicts the pope and nuns defecating. Since the Catholic League protested on January 4, Catholic volunteers at the museum have quit and several local Catholic groups have cancelled events. But museum officials are justifying the display by arguing that it is an acceptable tradition in Catalonia, Spain, to offer such fare; the artist who is responsible for this work, Antoni Miralda, is from Catalonia.

Catholic League president William Donohue reacted as follows:

“According to the latest AP article on this story, it is a Catalonian tradition to display figurines that depict famous people defecating; they are known as caganers. What was not said is that this tradition doesn’t travel very well. Ironically, the multicultural purists who populate the artistic community never tire of lecturing the public on the need to respect the cultural heritage of other countries. Yet somehow these rules are suspended when applied to importing artwork from abroad that offends Americans at home. In short, who cares what passes as acceptable in the scatological circles of Catalonia? This is our country. Thus, Miralda and his apologists are obliged to respect our traditions.

“The director of the Toy Museum in Catalonia, Josep Maria Joan, has characterized critics of Miralda’s work as ‘intolerant.’ This is what we would expect from someone who has been collecting caganers for over 40 years. His addiction has obviously messed up his judgment.

“On the hunch that someone who sees the Miralda masterpiece might be tempted to imitate the caganers, we are sending a pooper-scooper to COPIA director Peggy Loar. We previously sent a pooper-scooper to the Brooklyn Museum of Art after dung was thrown on a portrait of Our Blessed Mother. If this keeps up, we’ll have to make a bulk order.”

"You invited me over to see this? You think I've nothing better to do than hunt for little "poopers?"

The fact that it can be found in history or that it can be found anywhere is irrelevant. It is offensive and I would expect that there are many in history in Spain and elsewhere who have found it to be offensive. That Catholics find it so is certainly not surprising.

I think you misunderstand. If true, this is evidently a folk tradition of introducing a little human naughtiness into the scene, not unlike the antics of one or two of the shepherds in the medieval "Second Shepherd's Play." In traditional pictures of the Crucifixion, similarly, the soldiers are usually seen dicing over Christ's robe, as in the Gospel account. In some Netherlandish pictures, while the holy women and St. John look on in anguish, some of the bystanders are yawning or chatting, ignoring what is happening on the Cross. Even when God comes into the world as the Christ Child, or offers Himselves for the salvation of mankind, that doesn't mean that suddenly everyone will turn completely good.

That's quite a different matter from deliberately insulting the Pope. This article is a real stretch, typical of the liberal media springing to the defense of blasphemous and offensive art. It's like when that fellow painted the Virgin Mary covered with elephant dung, and the media instantly started claiming that elephant dung was "holy" in certain Indian traditions. Nonsense. The painting was clearly a deliberate insult to the Virgin Mary, to all Christians, and to Catholics in particular.

What is acceptable in Catalonia is irrelevant.

COPIA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution “dedicated to exploring the distinctively American contribution to the character of wine and food in close association with the arts and humanities, and to celebrating these as a unique expression of the vitality of American life, culture and heritage.” The museum, which opened November 18, 2001 (the same day “Active Ingredients” opened), is the brain-child of noted vintner Robert Mondavi; he made a donation of $20 million to launch the “Raising the Dough” campaign. The state of California contributed $70 million and another $4 million came from local tax money. “Active Ingredients” runs through April 22.

Catholic American taxpayers, particularly those in California, have a right to object to their money being spent on garbage like this.

What cute little poopers. Bathroom humor doesn't go over well with anyone who started potty-training before they were two-- and those who have it the worst, were potty-trained at a year.

William Donohue is the Jesse Jackson of Catholicism. His Catholic League no more represents Catholics than does the Rainbow Coalition represent blacks. Donohue exists to get his name in the paper and raise money from it.

Comparing Donohue in any way whatsoever to the Poverty Pimp is ludicrous.

Even when God comes into the world as the Christ Child, or offers Himselves for the salvation of mankind, that doesn't mean that suddenly everyone will turn completely good.

It also doesn't mean everyone will have good taste. Society as a whole has thrown out the ideas of class and dignity. out

WOOPSIE! YOU FORGOT THE HUGE DIFFERENCE: the Catholic League does not engage in EXTORTION!

Unlike Jester Jackperson, Donohue does not get any money nor demand any from the offenders. He merely highlights them so that all will know which people and orgnanizations are bigoted. <p

The real culpret here is the Mondavi Winery (Robert Mondavi,CEO) who finance a hefty portion of the museum. (In fact it was his idea!)

I urge all my fellow Freepers to do one simple thing: Print a copy of this article, along with the documentation from the original thread... and give it to just one grocery/liquor store that sells Mondavi wines. Ask for the managers reaction... (The local store where I shop...the manager is going to speak to the "wine merchant" when he comes in to restock.)

It may do no good! But so what! It get's the word out and even little ripples help!

Thank you and a Blessed New Years to you all!

>>>William Donohue is the Jesse Jackson of Catholicism.

Really? When was the last time Donohue showed up at some high school in his limo and his press contingent to scream racism (or religious bigotry) about a couple thugs who got kicked out of school for rampaging at a football game?

When was the last time one of Donohue's kin got a cushy job or contract from a corporation Donohue just sued in the media?

Can you point me to a couple of Donohue's love children being paid from the Catholic League's purse?

Have any of the organizations Donohue protested decided to donate millions to his organization(s)?

Your comparison leaves a bit to be desired.
