This has probably been discussed in great detail on other threads, but why doesn't the vice-president release his papers? If there is nothing controversial, it would greatly benefit him and would be the antithesis of the Clinton administration....

Cheney is trying to defend the principle that the Executive Branch is entitled to meet with people and not have the details made public. If the Executive Branch can't have private discussions, then many of those discussions will never occur, and that's not a good thing. It's all embodied in Executive Privilege, and Cheney doesn't feel like compromising that away just because some Democrats want to make political hay out of it.

The truth is, Hillary and her cohorts probably don't want the details revealed, because there wouldn't be anything of interest revealed. They like making a stink about it far more.

It's the principle of the thing. The Commission was working for the President-- offering him advice and information. The President has a right to keep those things private (separation of powers). Dubya wants to keep the power he has and not give it to Congress on principle-- even if it looks bad.

A little disappointing that it took 18 replies to this thread before someone--without issuing qualifying comments or snide remarks--simply acknowledged that Sen. Clinton is 100% correct in requesting release of the information in question.

Her hypocrisy in this matter is well-noted, but does not detract one bit from what the administration is (or isn't) making public.

Bob Novak is right--the "Arrogance of Power" exhibited by this and other stonewalling tactics is unbecoming an otherwise ethically-sound administration.
