SAN JOSE -- The leading Republican candidates for governor picked up Wednesday where their Tuesday night debate left off, with Bill Jones attacking Richard Riordan, and Bill Simon Jr. staying largely on the sidelines.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Riordan laid out a plan to revamp school budgeting by requiring districts to disclose how much they spend on bureaucracy versus classroom instruction.

Though privately conceding that Riordan's performance was shaky, campaign strategists were generally pleased that nothing apparently happened to upset the status quo. As one put it, "It was a nonevent, and from our perspective that's a good thing."
Sounds like a good slogan for the Riordan campaign.

Jones cited Riordan's hiring of Webster Hubbell--a confidant of former President Bill Clinton--and ex-City Councilman Richard Alatorre to work as lobbyists for the city. "These two performed little or no work," Jones said of the convicted felons.

Two debates are set to follow, but strategists for the front-running Riordan were convinced that Tuesday night's session was the one that mattered most. That is because the second debate, to be held next month at the state GOP convention, won't be broadcast statewide, and the third, Feb. 13 in Long Beach, will coincide with the Winter Olympics. What is the matter with this picture? On the first debate, the "San Diego Union-Tribune" had *NO* mention of it in the paper itself, nor in the tv listings the day of the debate. The following day it was FRONT PAGE news.
Only the website for one local station (at both the tv & AM radio sites) had mention of the debate and a vague bit about statewide broadcast (nothing about their coverage, if any). At least one freeper remarked the debate was not available live in Los Angeles.
They might as well not bother holding debates if it's going to be so easy for so many people to miss them.
Roger Hedgecock, sometime fill-in for Rush, will host a radio debate with the major candidates TODAY sometime between 3 & 6pm (Pacific). As of yesterday, only two candidates had accepted the debate invitation. The show is available LIVE via streaming audio here or at 600 AM.

I was talking to a rep from the Simon campaign and he alluded to a radio debate between Simon and Jones (he didn't have full details handy). I suppose this is the one he was talking about. Thanks for the link.
And, yes, it sucks about the loooooooow visibility of these debates.

What's so saddening here is that these pols can debate until the 22nd century & it's not gonna make one iota of difference. The elites want Dickie & it's settled. The elites wanted GW & I bet the farm that it would happen (2 1/2 yrs before the election). The elites wanted Jimmy Carter & they manipulated it thru the media & the rest is history. Since I won't participate in this charade anymore I curious to why so many continue, especially "true conservatives" who get beat down every election.

Thanks for the ping. THis is the first I've heard of the debate. Sounds like Riordan is taking the Hillary! approach and avoiding any discussion of a platform as much as possible.
