I dont know why they feel the need to run these scenerios on civilians anyway i do understand the needs to run them but not on the general populace what if this would have been a ARMED civilian just thinking he was defending himself?
WOULD HE MORE THAN LIKELY BE IN JAIL ?
To: kattracks
they mistook him for a participant in their training exercise and tried to take his gun awayHmmm. . . why are there practicing disarming?

Makes me wonder - what if John Q. Citizen who is on his property happens to run up on some of the Special Ops folks training and feels his life is in danger and kills one? Does he/she get admin leave or a go to jail card?

Check this out. Ugly, and not unforeseeable, given the increased rate of MOUT training off-post.

I'm wondering the same thing. Why is part of the exercise the disarming of sheriffs' deputies? Are the deputies supposedly sympathetic to their local communities and therefore must be disarmed by the federal troops? Lots of questions here.

It seems to me Butler was acting entirely correct - especially post-9/11. He pulls over two strangers; one apparently tries to disarm him while another apparently tries to retrieve an M-4 (isn't that the snazzy cut-down M-16?). Were I Butler I would definitely be shooting first and asking questions later. While I am not happy a U.S. soldier has died this fault lies more with this soldier's officers than it does with Butler; Butler acted correctly.

Isn't there a Posse Comitatus Act that addresses this? Why does our government fail to abide by their own laws? The person or persons responsible for these soldiers and their illegal training exercises should be in the iron bar hotel for an extended period of time.

Remember the line from "Seven Days in May," based on the Fletcher Knebel novel about a military plot to seize the U.S. government? The Andrew Duggan character, who is part of a secret military unit, says to Jiggs (played by Kirk Douglas), "Funny, we seem to be training more for TAKING than for DEFENDING. Like the Commies already had the place, and we were trying to get it back."

Sign of the times. It's a wonder it hasn't happened sooner.

Hmmm. . . why are there practicing disarming?
Perhaps so they can deal with enemies in other countries?

Running this kind of drill in public places is nuts. It may be good practice, but as this event shows, mishaps that include the civilian population are inevitable. The military should drop the practice.
My sympathy to the cop, the same though a little less to the soldiers.
Tough cop though, if two spec ops guys can't take him at a traffic stop.
