Sunday quake might have been caused by bombing -- source

Story Filed: Tuesday, March 05, 2002 10:47 AM EST

MOSCOW, Mar 05, 2002 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- The earthquake that shook Central and South Asia last Sunday might have been triggered by super-modern weapons intensively used by the U.S. aviation in the seismically dangerous areas of Afghanistan, a source in a Moscow geo-physical research center has told Itar-Tass on condition of anonymity.

He said the supposition was confirmed by the unusually strong and lengthy tremors (up to one minute) that originated in the Hindu Kush Mountains and spread onto Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India. Even old residents of Kabul do not remember an earthquake similar to the Sunday tremor that exceeded 6 points on the Richter scale.

"A possible reason for the tremor was the American's large-scale use of powerful bombs, including the ones that are capable of starting avalanches in the mountains," the expert said.

I am sure the Islamic world already believes this is true. This anonymous bonehead from the un-named Moscow geo-physical research center only confirms the (to them) obvious. Given that this is from ITAR/TASS, the source probably does not even exist. I only present it here as a hint of what the Great Satan USA will be blamed for next.

For any lurking Moscow geo-physicists out there, remember: EARTH BIG/man little. There is very little the average man can do to make the earth move (present company excluded).

Wasn't the quake referred to 7.2 on the Richter scale? No way we could do this. But oh the possibilities IF we could!

If the dumba**es of the 3rd world are going to believe this, we might as well take advantage of it. Let's announce we have the power to shake apart any nation on earth with our super duper earthquake generator Mk.8 ... LOL!

When Pakistan and India had their nuclear highmarking contest a couple years ago, there were earthquakes in the region. Did the nukes trigger the quakes?

Even though the source probably doesn't exist, I hope this is true. Strike terror in the heart of the evil ones: "The Americans can make the earth move"...(wait a minute...Moses could do that too...maybe Allah IS on the side of the Americans!)

I heard that a magnitude 12 on the Richter sscale = fault the earth through its core. Let's start a rumor that we have a weapon that can do THAT...

As bizarre as this may seem, there may be a grain of truth in this story.

There was an incident a few years ago in northern Ontario involving a truck carrying explosive materials to one of the major nickel mines in the Sudbury area. The truck caught fire and was abandoned by the driver on the side of the road (smart man -- he knew exactly what he was carrying). It blew up a little while later, and the force was so powerful that the Ontario Highway Ministry shut down the Trans-Canada Highway for miles in either direction for several weeks while they inspected all of the bridge structures in the area.

Because the Sudbury basin is located in a region where the earth's plates are pushed up close to the surface (hence the wealth of easily-accessible minerals like copper and nickel in the region), there was a real concern at the time that the force of the explosion could affect the integrity of structures all through the region.

I don't believe anyone was injured in this incident. This story didn't really make the news even in other parts of Canada, since the truck blew up in the middle of nowhere.

We should drop leaflets around the ME desalination plants.

'We can precipitate a big bye-bye here, too.'

Sounds like Russia's chipping in on the propaganda for us, that's right neighborly.

Besides this is being, maybe the stupidest thing ever said...If it were true so what! There is no bases in science that a bomb of the sizes we are using could cause anything but the mildest earth movement.

And he apparently has started.

We should "honestly" admit that this is one of our capabilities (earthquake creation). In rocky or mountainous countries, mountains can be brought down on our enemy and in sandy countries the sand will become fluidized by the shaking and swallow up whole cities and countrysides. It is only "fair" that we provide this information to our opponents.

Well, there is one way to find out. Let's do it again and see what happens. One bomb for each soldier killed.

It really isn't any worse than our own press does on a regular basis.
