One Florida Initiative is a Success [and, Gov. Bush again disses Alec, on Jeb's campaign site! LOL!]

One Florida Initiative is a Success

Just over two years ago, Governor Bush unveiled the One Florida Initiative. The initiative was designed to replace Florida’s system of race-based quotas, set-asides, and preferences. Unfair admissions policies based on race were replaced with greater outreach and recruitment as well as an increased emphasis on student performance.

Last August, the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the University of Georgia’s race-based admissions policies, a ruling that applies to Florida. In their ruling, the 11th Circuit praised tools used in One Florida such as “recruiting, advertising, financial incentives to admittees from less advantaged homes, and other outreach strategies,” and “innovative strategies in the admissions process itself, ranging from income-based selection to guaranteeing admission to the top percentage of graduating seniors in every high school in the state.” Governor Bush’s foresight in implementing One Florida prevented a court-ordered last-minute scramble to make Florida’s admission policies race-neutral. As a result of this court decision, there’s no turning back.

The One Florida Initiative, which has now been in place for two full years, is making a positive impact on Florida’s high school students by better preparing them for college. By raising standards and partnering with high schools, universities, and the College Board, we are seeing results in the form of higher student achievement. In addition, Florida’s executive agencies have increased spending with certified minority business by 160%.

Today, members of liberal political organizations and a “mildly talented” Hollywood actor came to Tallahassee to again voice their opposition to the plan which has proven successful in increasing state spending with minority businesses and ensuring that there are more minority students enrolled in Florida’s universities than ever before. While the opponents to the plan long for the days of quotas and set-asides, the Bush-Brogan team will continue to look to the future to a state where all students have every opportunity to reach their greatest potential.

The following are the facts on the One Florida Initiative: [Click here and scroll down for chart.]

It is not fun posting on every thread and annoying all of you. We are volunteers and do so because we love Free Republic and want to see it continue for a long time.

Ask yourself these questions:

Where is the first place I go to on the internet to find out what's happening with politics?
Am I getting any benefit from Free Republic?
Am I learning from Free Republic?

Free Republic is not free. It costs Jim Robinson tens of thousands of dollars to keep this forum running. There are almost 80,000 registered users on Free Republic and approximately 1,000 Freepers help keep this forum running. Those who do not have the ability to donate money could help by bumping the threads once in a while. I've been in a position where the funds were low and every penny was needed to pay for frivolous things such as food. Those who do have the means should be ashamed of yourselves. You are a FReeploader. Go ahead, flame me. I don't care. I contribute to Free Republic, and I for one do not want to see this forum dead.

If everyone who registered donated one measly dollar a month, we would never have to have a fundraiser again. Thus ending the silly graphics and posts. But, it's not happening, so we will continue this annoying process until we reach our goal.

That was a quote aout Alec, made by FL Lt. Gov. Brogan the other day. There are about three or four related threads on this matter. I would post them, but I'm running out the door at this moment! I'll try to post them later so you can see the whole story.

This is great, but Jeb should make no more references to Baldwin after this. Jeb is the governor and brother of the president, Baldwin is a celebrity who couldn't hold onto a great looking wife. He is nobody worth being concerned with. (Of course that is true of Janet Reno and the other Dems also.)

It's not really "Jeb" speaking -- it's just his campaign site! :)

That is good, but my comments also apply to a public campaign website. It is the internet voice of the candidate.

I think it's a very mild comment. They didn't even name him. For more colorful comments, you'd have to read how FR posters captioned Alec's photo here.

Do you think this comment on Gov. Bush's web site -- "mildly talented" Hollywood actor -- is going to hurt anyone's feelings? :)

I guess you did not take offense! Neither did I. I thought it was mild. And I can't really understand why anyone would take offense here.

I hate to admit it but "Beetlejuice" is one of my guilty pleasures. Unfortunately, Alec hit the donuts in a big way since he made that film.
