Powell Shocker: Calls Palestinian Suicide Bombers 'Innocents'

During an interview Sunday, Secretary of State Colin Powell complained that "innocent" Palestinian suicide bombers were being killed as a result of Yassir Arafat's resistance to Mideast peace efforts.

"He will not be able to defeat Israel, if anyone thinks that is in his mind - or in the mind of any Palestinian leader," Powell told "Fox News Sunday."

"All we're doing is killing lots of innocent people by this kind of activity," he added. "We're killing lots of innocent young Palestinians who commit this act of murder called suicide bombing. And we're killing lots of innocents on the other side and other Palestinian innocents are killed in the response that comes back."

FNS moderator Tony Snow, to whom Powell made the bizarre comments, apparently missed his reference to Palestinian suicide bombers as "innocent" and did not challenge him on the characterization.

I never said it before: I think the man is NUTS. Either he made a classic "blooper" or he is trying to get Arab support ....but he is NUTS. How can this but NOT encourage more young people to serve Allah by blowing up babies and women in restaurants. So suicide bombers are innocent? I thought Colin Powell spoke from the brain; I think he speaks from the colin.

I heard it, and Powell simply misspoke. He was trying to correct it in the next sentence speaking of Palestinian innocents being killed by the Israeli response.

Snow chose to ignore it, because it was obvious what Powell meant.

He's got a point. A lot of these suicide bombers have been fed a line since childhood and are victims of cynical manipulation themselves, which is a pretty good description of an innocent.

History supports the fact that you cannot negotiate with terrorists. Terrorists are not rational people. Trying to deal with terrorists is like trying to deal with a cockroach infestation. Words don't work.

For 8 years, the Clinton team placated, negotiated, occasionally tossed a few tomahawk missiles. Results: negligable.

Now, it seems the Bush2 team are using the same type of strategy. It hasn't worked. It won't work.

Until a permanent solution is forced on the PLO, the terrorism will continue. It may cease for a time, but will return--in days, weeks, months.

That's the most boneheaded remark Powell has made so far, but it has some close competition.

Powell is a slave to the most discredited conceits of the present age. He's not even a RINO. He's in the Republican Party only because after he left the military he calculated that his prospects for success were better there than they would have been if he'd become a Democrat and had to defend every asinine remark Jesse Jackson and Al Shaprton made. In every meaningful sense, Powell is a wishy-washy liberal of the worst stripe.
