Davis is holding a live press conference right now, but he's refusing to answer questions about the Oracle scandal.

If Gray Davis really wanted to "fill the $23.6 billion hole" in his budget, he would follow the lead of JFK and Ronald Reagan and reduce personal and corporate taxes in the Golden State.

Sounds like there's going to be a lot of smoke and mirrors, including some heavy borrowing and "a very creative and badly needed approach that shifts school funding between fiscal years." I presume that means stealing from next year's budget to put the pain off until after the election.

"This budget reflects my view, and the views of most economists, that some time in the next 12 months, California will experience a recovery," Davis said.

If I decode this correctly, it means that his budget contains some rosy assumptions about how much revenue will be received by the state. Of course, if you raise taxes and cut spending, that is likely to hurt the California economy, not help it.

So, it means that we have a shell game being proposed, in addition to some optimistic figures, combined with taxes that will hurt every driving Californian (nearly 100%), and a cut in services in the health sector.

Lots for Bill Simon to have fun with, I'd imagine.

Oh, they'll come up with TONS of smoke and TRUCKLOADS of mirrors to get through to the election. Then, once the votes are counted and the smoke clears Gray will get on the podium and tell everyone how bad things REALLY are. Oh, I do not envy Californians at this point.

Davis is hoping AB1058 will revitalize the bicycle industry in California. Raising the vehicle registration is a way to encourage more $5 PNO declarations in place of $300+ registrations. Another 60 cents per gallon tax on gas in a market that is already overpriced? That will certainly stimulate business activities and associated revenus from commerce. A per mile fee is really nice too...in a state where things are so spread out that driving is a necessity. The democrats delayed their vote on AB1058 yesterday as a consequence of intense phone calls in opposition. The idiots may yet vote yes. Perata's 5 cents per cartridge tax on ammo is going to be a big fundraiser too. Stupidity is its own reward.

When the Gov was challenged about how short the state was, when he seemed oblivious to the magnitude of the shortfall in January, he referred to some credit-scoring analyst who was also surprised at the lack of funds.

Before he turned the conference over to a budget wonk, he also mentioned that since Prop 13, the state has only been able to rely on income tax and sales taxes and due to the shortfall in income taxes, he'll have "to look and see" if there is anything that can be done to change that.

Sounds like a bigger sales tax for many items coming.

Davis has to go--If Bill Simon can`t beat this guy, well, California is toast . Its easy to see what the plan is, hide the fact that they`re going to steal next years revenue, quickly pass a budget, and,if elected, worry about it after the election. The R`s can`t let them get away with it this time.

HALF of the budget is "balanced" via fund shift, transfers, and other cloak and dagger methods of accounting.

He is calling for a temporary increase to state vehicle license fees

Not in the history of all of human civilization has there ever been a "temporary" tax increase.

What makes anyone think this yutz is going to come through on that promise?

Now, motorists pay about a third of the vehicle license fee that they paid in 1998 -- but the state pays $3.8 billion a year to reimburse cities and counties for revenues lost by the reduction. Now, Davis is proposing to increase the rate back to the level it was in 1999. The car tax is based on the value of the vehicle.

Very sneaky of Gray Davis. The car tax is not paid on a set date for everyone, but on the anniversary of the car purchase. This would mean that on the average, Gray Davis would only upset a small portion of the voting public. Maybe not even phase the car tax in until well after the elections.

Yep, got three leaving Commiefornia emails today from lifelong residents.

Unless massive amounts of conservative Comrads flood the polls in November, Davis and the Rats vote fraud machine will put him right back in....that is if there are massive numbers of conservatives left in November.

If you choose to stay and fight, you need to get all of the fidos and fluffys, as well as the illegal immigrants and criminals off of the voting roles between now and then, and make sure they don't sneak them back in.

The 3 folks that emailed me this AM, have already concluded these to be impossible. So, it's off to Nevada and Idaho.
