Somewhere right now, Bill Simon is having a real good laugh.

Dozens of journalists spent hours poring over more than 1,000 pages of the GOP gubernatorial candidate's tax returns Monday, and the only thing they learned for sure is that this is why they never became accountants.

Ahh, the Chronicle. Searching for the scandal that isn't.

Does Simon drive an SUV or keep his air conditioner set too low?

The SF Comical is making up a scandal. The SF twit was probably too busy lusting after another guy to read the tax return. I guess ole Gray Davis (the runt) will have to raise another $10 million, just in case.

Right, since they could not find it , he must be hiding it!

You know, if I were a reporter that his was important to me (which it wouldn't be), I would have met with all my fellow reporters before seeing the returns and agree on which sections each one of us would focus on, then pull our notes after the perusal of the returns. For example, one reporter could look at only the two summary pages and copy down each and every line; one could look at the personal income, another at the business income, another at the deductions, another at the amendments, someone to write down all partnership names for further research, another doing something else.

They didn't work together, and now they complain that they didn't have enough time. Poor babies. They could have copied every word if they simply worked together and planned it out.

Still, I don't think Simon should have felt forced to release his returns, and I think he gave them ample time and opportunity. He paid more than "his fair share" (whatever that means) and now he can focus on Davis and his failed leadership.

Go Simon!

Indeed, more than half of Simon's income each year makes its way into his pockets

I have just spotted the "smoking gun" and I didn't even need to see the returns. He manages to keep more than half of his income. To some people that's a crime.

David Lazarus is an appalling Marxist. I'm amazed that he has become the Chronicle's primary business columnist - I thought even they had more sense that that.

Just take a good look at that sentence, will ya? "Half of HIS income makes its way into HIS pockets", instead of "half his income manages to STAY in his pockets" or "somehow the federal, state, and local governments involved could not manage, even through cooperative effort, to strip him of more than half his income".

I bet you can all hear me grumbling right now...

Last night on the 10 o'clock news, they reported at one of Davis's offices (can't remember which), there was a Watergate-like break in. It was making Simon look like Richard Nixon. Did anyone see that?

"You get a sense that he really doesn't want anyone to know what's going on, " said Richard Del Monte, a Danville investment adviser. "This was just an exercise in futility."

You would think an investor advisor might know what to look for and could find something in 3 hours. Maybe instead of saying, "This was just an exercise in futility." he could have said, "There's no scandal here"?

Go Simon.
