Nowadays, the first thing that occurs to me is a Muslim terrorist infiltrator.

I know. I know. "Don't go overboard."

But we are at war, and Islamists do consider murder to be "serving Allah".

I don't think this one is going to be the wife, since their kids were home at the time and also a friend of one of the children was spending the night. Sounds like older children. Someone could have gotten up and seen her.
I think it's going to turn out to be an intruder.

Joan Shannon told police she woke to the sound of two gun shots and saw an intruder leaving the home.

I wonder if the intruder was a woman wearing a floppy hat and chanting "Kill the Pigs".

Anybody remember Jeffrey MacDonald (the case that the book and miniseries "Fatal Vision" was based on)? I believe he was a Green Beret stationed at Fort Bragg, back in the early seventies (or maybe late sixties).

My husband was stationed at Ft. Bragg in the late 70s and early 80s...I think we got there just after the Jeffrey McDonald incident...

One of the men in my husbands unit went berserk, and raped and killed his girlfriend...he will be in jail for the rest of his life...

A month before we were to be transfered to Ft. Lewis Washington, some creep broke into our house in the middle of the night, while I and my kids were there, and stole my purse....my son heard someone in the house, got up, and saw the intruder...luckily for us, the creep appears to have been unarmed, and just ran away, toting my purse...he never was caught...

Take it from a part (soon to be full) time resident of Fayetteville--the PD is no more capable of solving a murder than the Boulder, CO PD. (Jon Benet) They are, however, very adept at "sniffing out " marijuana smokers. Now, if they were allowed to confiscate the property of a murderer, or simply impose a huge fine, the story may be different.......

Wife Of Fort Bragg Soldier Charged With Murder

POSTED: 6:19 a.m. EDT July 31, 2002
UPDATED: 7:30 a.m. EDT July 31, 2002

The wife of a Special Operations officer has been charged in his shooting death.

Police charged Joan Shannon Tuesday with first-degree murder and conspiracy in the last week's slaying of Major David Shannon. Police spokesman Lieutenant Tom Guilette says financial gain was believed to be a motive in the crime.

Three of the 40-year-old Shannon's four children and a teenage friend were at home at the time of the shooting. Shannon was shot in the chest and head as he slept.

Joan Shannon told police that she awoke to gunshots about 3 a.m. on July 23. She said she saw an intruder and followed him from the bedroom down a hallway. She was unable to give police a description.

David Shannon had been stationed at Fort Bragg for two years. His death is the most recent of five domestic violence killings involving Fort Bragg soldiers since mid-June.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The wife of an Army Special Operations officer at Fort Bragg has been charged in the shooting death of her husband.

Joan Shannon was charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the July 23 shooting death of Maj. David Shannon.

"We believe financial gain is one of the primary motives of the crime," said Lt. Tom Guilette of the Fayetteville Police Department.

Three of Shannon's four children and a teenage friend were at home at the time of the shooting. Shannon was shot in the chest and head as he slept, police said.

Joan Shannon told police that she awoke to gunshots about 3 a.m. She said she saw an intruder and followed him from the bedroom down a hallway. She was unable to give police a description.

David Shannon, 40, had served in the Army since 1987 and was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. He had been at Fort Bragg two years.

Joan Shannon had worked as a loan receptionist at the Fort Bragg Credit Union about a year, said her supervisor, Mae Davis. Davis said workers there raised about $500 for Joan Shannon and her family after her husband's death.

David Shannon's death is the most recent domestic-related homicide with a connection to Fort Bragg in the past six weeks. Four Fort Bragg wives have been killed, allegedly by their husbands, since June 11. Fort Bragg officials say they are looking closely at the cases in an effort to determine whether military life contributed to the slayings.
