I didn't mean his "posting" like a comment on the internet, I meant his "posting" like he was physically posted at the SOC by the Army.

You know, as in "don't desert your post".

My husband was stationed at Ft. Bragg in the late 70s and early 80s...I think we got there just after the Jeffrey McDonald incident...

One of the men in my husbands unit went berserk, and raped and killed his girlfriend...he will be in jail for the rest of his life...

A month before we were to be transfered to Ft. Lewis Washington, some creep broke into our house in the middle of the night, while I and my kids were there, and stole my purse....my son heard someone in the house, got up, and saw the intruder...luckily for us, the creep appears to have been unarmed, and just ran away, toting my purse...he never was caught...

Oh, yes I remember that case. Well, I don't really "remember" it, since I was just a tot back in 1970, but I read "Fatal Vision". Jeffrey McDonald reminds me a lot of OJ Simpson, as far as personalities go.

We have friends who tell us how women would line the sidewalk in front of the Federal Courthouse in Raleigh to catch a glimpse of the guy.

"If that were the case, they'd leave a calling card to publicize their success. The terrorist's whole purpose is defeated if he or she acts covertly."

I'm not so sure. I suspect that covert terrorist attacks were carried out before September 11 and have not yet been fully recognized as such--e.g. unexplained plane crashes, "accidental" deaths, et al. Terrorist attacks could (and perhaps did) remain covert as experimental preparations for future attacks, to eliminate specific individuals, or for other reasons. Furthermore, claims and boasting could follow at some later time.

so even tho suicide seems impossible, I'm going with that one

Forensics should be clearcut if he shot himself. (Twice!)

Powder residues on his hand. Handgun lying nearby or still in his hand. Powder traces and burn marks on the entry wounds.

More details needed of course. But from the looks of things, this soldier was hit. Who and why?

Hi Vade
yes, you are right
we haven't heard any evidence yet

professional is usually when someone doesn't pay back the money they borrowed (or owed)
I always thought Versace was professional
and I think false trail is laid to fall guy when it's professional

my own intuition is this is not professional

Arkansides are the only documented cases of suicide to be shot from the back or more than once.

Versace was not a professional hit. He was offed by homicidal gay guy who had offed other gay guys before he hit Versace.

seems like motive was a little weak there
he had seen Versace once at huge party
if Versace owed a lot of money to the mob
there is motive
I followed that case and I don't remember anyone investigating Versace's finances
the FBI is under such pressure to nail the culprit fast
and there was so much circumstantial evidence against the other guy
who in any case was killed so fast there never was a trial

He was stalking Versace, trying to get close to him. He did that with other successful gay men, whom he then murdered. The guy was a homicidal nut case. Maybe Versace never noticed him or told him to go away and enraged him. Versace was not in financial trouble that anyone in Florida ever heard about. He was loaded. The House of Versace is strong.

Take it from a part (soon to be full) time resident of Fayetteville--the PD is no more capable of solving a murder than the Boulder, CO PD. (Jon Benet) They are, however, very adept at "sniffing out " marijuana smokers. Now, if they were allowed to confiscate the property of a murderer, or simply impose a huge fine, the story may be different.......

Wife Of Fort Bragg Soldier Charged With Murder

POSTED: 6:19 a.m. EDT July 31, 2002
UPDATED: 7:30 a.m. EDT July 31, 2002

The wife of a Special Operations officer has been charged in his shooting death.

Police charged Joan Shannon Tuesday with first-degree murder and conspiracy in the last week's slaying of Major David Shannon. Police spokesman Lieutenant Tom Guilette says financial gain was believed to be a motive in the crime.

Three of the 40-year-old Shannon's four children and a teenage friend were at home at the time of the shooting. Shannon was shot in the chest and head as he slept.

Joan Shannon told police that she awoke to gunshots about 3 a.m. on July 23. She said she saw an intruder and followed him from the bedroom down a hallway. She was unable to give police a description.

David Shannon had been stationed at Fort Bragg for two years. His death is the most recent of five domestic violence killings involving Fort Bragg soldiers since mid-June.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The wife of an Army Special Operations officer at Fort Bragg has been charged in the shooting death of her husband.

Joan Shannon was charged on Tuesday with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in the July 23 shooting death of Maj. David Shannon.

"We believe financial gain is one of the primary motives of the crime," said Lt. Tom Guilette of the Fayetteville Police Department.

Three of Shannon's four children and a teenage friend were at home at the time of the shooting. Shannon was shot in the chest and head as he slept, police said.

Joan Shannon told police that she awoke to gunshots about 3 a.m. She said she saw an intruder and followed him from the bedroom down a hallway. She was unable to give police a description.

David Shannon, 40, had served in the Army since 1987 and was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command. He had been at Fort Bragg two years.

Joan Shannon had worked as a loan receptionist at the Fort Bragg Credit Union about a year, said her supervisor, Mae Davis. Davis said workers there raised about $500 for Joan Shannon and her family after her husband's death.

David Shannon's death is the most recent domestic-related homicide with a connection to Fort Bragg in the past six weeks. Four Fort Bragg wives have been killed, allegedly by their husbands, since June 11. Fort Bragg officials say they are looking closely at the cases in an effort to determine whether military life contributed to the slayings.

aaaaaah-HA!!! I'm not surprised at all. Whenever a married person gets killed in their own home, you wouldn't lose too much money if you bet on the spouse every time.

Did you see the story about the teacher being murdered in Cary?
WRAL played the 911 call. Her husband did NOT sound very convincing.
