Bill Simon at Nixon Library
Vanity | 09/02/02 | gubamyster

Bill Simon his wife and children were at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, CA this morning. My wife, kids & myself arrived at about 11:00. We stood around for a while talking to other Simon supporters.

At about 11:30 Simon & his family arrived in a Chevy Suburban. He met the crowd of about 75 people out front. I grabbed my 4-yr old daughter & ran to the front. We were able to shake Bill's hand & also his wife's hand. I also let him know the OC FReepers were behind him 100%.

He moved on into the library and then back outside to a patio area. The Boy Scouts were selling grilled hot dogs & hamburgers. Bill bought (with his own money from his pocket) a hamburger & stopped to greet more people. He answered a few questions

He & his family then moved on to the back of the museum to the Nixon family house. He and his family had a private tour.

They then moved back towards the front of the library where they answered questions from the media & crowd. CBS Channel 2 & Fox were among the media covering the event. He said his campaign is really kicking-off today. He said he was ready for things to heat up (it was pretty hot out at the library today) between him & Davis so he could talk about the issues that mattered to Californians. He gave his stump speech about Davis being a failed governor and the firs coin-operated governor.

Overall it was a great experience and I’m glad I went to meet the next governor of CA.

Great going! I got the heads-up from seenenuf, thought about going, and leaned back until the feeling passed. It's great to hear your experience. Thanks!

This question was actually addressed at the press conference. Simon said that this was because his father was in the Nixon administration, so it was a coming home of sorts for him.

He likes this location; he's going to have a major press conference on Monday September 30th there as well.

Point of etiquette: Should I post my account of the event here or on a new thread?

Buddy what is your problem????? Are you a Dem disrupter? You must be because Dems speak of the late president as though he was some kind of demon, Republicans have a huge amount of respect for Richard Nixon. The library is crowded with them on a regular basis.

Why don't you go away and come back when you know what you are talking about.

A few years ago we had a whole busload of Freepers that went to the Nixon Library and also went to the Reagan Library the same day!

Believe it or not, I went to the Richard M. Nixon Library on my honeymoon - sort of. My parents & other relatives were in town. My father was a huge Nixon fan & we went to the library the day after my wedding.

I think it's okay to post it here, the thread is small and your experience will fit right in. However, if your writing is really really good, we'll browbeat you to repost it on its own thread.

....we're waiting....

A Nixon Library FReep on September 30 may be a good idea, but how about a WARMUP FReep, on:
TUESDAY, September 17 - noon to 2 pm
at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills

Bill Simon will be debating the Green Party candidate at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at 2 pm.

The Greens and the RATs will be there at noon.

IMHO, we need to counter them with a "DumpDAVIS" FReep, see post 92:

"Dump DAVIS" FReep ideas:
statewide "Super SIMON" street theater puts Davis-in-a-Dumpster, NEW logo

Why is it that all these events are during the day on weekdays?

I'm afraid my boss is distinctly unsympathetic to any calls for time off, so I fear that I can't exercise my documentation duties :-(.

Argh ... because I'd really love to go, but can't :-(.

Not to worry. ;O)
We are saving the BIG ONE for you!
How is your schedule for a Sacramento "DumpDAVIS" FReep on SATURDAY in early in October - perhaps the 5th or the 12th?

We are going to have FReepers from ALL OVER California for THAT one - even Jim Robinson!

Buddy what is your problem?

My problem is I'm tired of milquetoast idiot Republicans who don't know the fist thing about public relations running for office.

Are you a Dem disrupter?

Nope. It's just that unlike some Republicans, I didn't have my brains violently sucked out moments before registering to vote.

You must be because Dems speak of the late president as though he was some kind of demon, Republicans have a huge amount of respect for Richard Nixon. The library is crowded with them on a regular basis. Why don't you go away and come back when you know what you are talking about.

I've never understood this Republican fascinaton with Nixon. So Nixon was a Republican. Big whoop. He wasn't a demon along the lines of Bill Clinton but the guy was as Liberal as they come and that's just as bad for the country. Among other things, he imposed wage and price control and he created bureaucratic monstrosities like OSHA and the EPA. But, then, you already know all that don't you? If Simon intends to govern as a Nixon Republican -- noooooooooo thanks ! And besides, Simon already has the Republican nomination locked up (or did his staffers not tell him that).

As far as people visiting the library, big deal. People are going to visit Clinton's stupid library, too. And in case you forgot, Nixon got drummed out of office in disgrace.

Simon is already being portrayed as a corporate scumbag so what does he do? He pays homage to a political scumbag. It makes no sense to me.

And as for me going away a while, that's what it's really all about isn't it? You just want people like me to line up like little lemmings and vote for the guy who has the letter "R" in parentheses next to his name. Well, forget it. If Simon wants Conservative votes, let him work for them like he works for gay and Liberal votes.

Is that too much to ask?

Nope, we can get idiotic ranting on the news any day. Thinking conservatives come here for intelligent discussion. That's why I'm hoping you will go away.
