LONG BEACH -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon, charging that Gov. Gray Davis is killing California's rich economy, said Monday that he would have vetoed the family leave legislation Davis signed into law later in the day.
"I support the concept of paid leave for people, particularly workers who can't afford to take unpaid leave," Simon told reporters. "(But) I don't think this is the best way to accomplish some type of paid leave."

Could this be the start of a "scorched earth" policy by Davis ?
Kind of like all the legislative land mines that Clinton left for Bush in his last days ?

Think so as we're coming down the home stretch and need to hit DAVIS hard. In my wildest, other than unions, who will actually be excited to come out and vote for Davis? Need some help. Will be attending Simon's policy speech at the Nixon Library on Monday and hope to hear a little more "scorched earth" stuff.

"Over the course of the next six weeks, I'd sure like to spend the bulk of our time on our message -- how Gray Davis has failed as governor," Simon said. The Money from the East should help !

I hardly think this statement makes Simon any different. He proposes an opt-in for paid leave. It would proably exclude the very people he says he supports. Those that really can't afford to pay the payroll tax for family leave benefits.
it's all goofy talk.

Simon is supposed to be a free enterprise conservative. He is apparently trying to "moderate" some of his views to appease the "moderates". I think that is a big mistake. Davis however is a socialist/statist that has bankrupted California with his "leadership". Voting for Simon won't fix the problem but hopefully a Simon victory will change the direction of state government.

You have a point. I suppose if Simon gets elected, he could slowly drift back to right. Lord knows we in Illinoois saw the opposite.
Conservative Geroge Ryan, when he became Gov. Ryan morphed into a bleeding heart/tax & spend liberal. We would have been better off with the Demo, Glenn Poshard.
Gov. Ryan has so wrecked the Repub party, that I fear the Rats will clean sweep the state elections.

"Just like in insurance, you could take out insurance or not take out insurance," he said. "You choose that for yourself. Why not have an opt-in provision?" Davis: Mandatory socialism. Simon: Opt-in socialism. (Which, once established, would have been made mandatory after a few years, anyway.) A distinction without a difference.
Simon is throwing away any distinction that does make a difference -- here, and with offshore drilling, and with a host of social issues. (I don't agree with him on many of those, but I can admire consistency in one's moral stands. Simon isn't sticking to his stands.)
I'm coming to not particularly care -- and that comes from a Libertarian who wasn't going to vote for the current LP candidate for governor, even before he was unendorsed. Simon was getting my vote, but not if he keeps throwing away any stand on principles like this.

Gray Davis is a whore.

Could this be the start of a "scorched earth" policy by Davis? Kind of like all the legislative land mines that Clinton left for Bush in his last days? No, I think Davis is shoring up his base. Reminding the Left that he's measurably "better" than Simon, and giving the Left a reason to turn out for him on November.

Absolutely right. Simon is proving to be almost as bad a RINO as Riordan would have been. His reward? He continues to sink in the polls. If voters don't perceive a dime worth of difference between the imitation and the real thing, they will usually vote for the real thing.
