If California election were today, Simon would probably win: Dick Morris

Appearing on Mark Larson's Larson Live! radio show (KRLA 870AM Los Angeles, KCBQ 1170AM San Diego and KRLH 590AM in Riverside and San Bernardino) this morning, political strategist Dick Morris was asked about the California governor's race. Noting that the current polls give Davis 45% to Simon's 35%, Morris said that with numbers like that, if the election were held today then Simon would likely win by a small margin. Morris said that an incumbent (Davis) must get credibly close to 50% to have a reasonable chance of victory. The reason is that the challenger has less name recognition among undecided voters, who are likely to break to the challenger as they become more familiar with him. Morris says that, as an experienced campaigner, Davis is well aware of this. Davis is presently calling on Simon to step down after the latest gaffe regarding the illegal fundraising accusations by Simon. Morris said that Davis "being all over Simon" should be regarded as more of a measure of Simon's strength than his weakness.

This is certainly a lot more encouraging than the crepe-hanging stories I've been seeing lately. Whatever you think of Morris' personal life or past affiliations, he generally knows what he's talking about in these matters.

Methinks the media is doing an "Arthur Andersen" with the polling numbers. Dick Morris does have a good idea for how politics is played, and while I don't care for his hired gun approach or his personal character, I'd still listen to him.

Simon has stumbled here and there, much to the delight and wishful thinking of the "I told you so" Riordan contingent around these parts. While perhaps not the ideal candidate, given his inexperience, Simon was the best of the GOP field in the primaries.

I do wish Simon would bang on Davis more for the bonded indebtedness issue. Many Californians have no clue as to the boat anchor of debt that Davis has chained to their future taxes.

Probably a bit of both. One would think that the Republicans would see through the Clymers hit pieces, but many don't. Coop will attest to the fact that bad news for Simon threads fill up, but good news for Simon threads don't. I stopped engaging the naysayers. They are quitters, IMHO. Like the Rats and Toricelli. This race is far from over, indeed, Simon is going to win. Watch....

Have you heard Simon talking about tax cuts? I wish he would talk a little bit more about cutting taxes. Also, I have been wondering for awhile why the Republican party doesn't put a tax cutting initiative on the ballot ala Prop. 13. It's a tried and true strategy to make the liberals go bonkers. It seems to me that an initiative which cut the sales tax or the income tax would be a great issue to define the differences between the Republicans in this state and the Democrats.

I'm equally if not more concerned with the bond issues that are on the ballot.

If there is a decent voter turnout they will probably all be passed by those that don't have to pay for them.

I'm glad Dick Morris said the same thing some of us have been saying for months. Gray Davis' re-elect numbers stink. They rival Torricelli's. We know what happened to him. Simon's undoubtedly had his problems, but the incumbent is in bad shape.

Yeah, it's like mailing platinum credit cards to everyone on food stamps.

What CA needs is a referendum requiring all social spending to be placed on the ballots. Most voters don't understand financial fungibility, so they don't know that when they pass a school, parks, police, or firemen's bond issue, they're really giving more money to welfare slackers.

I hear way more than I should about Davis' corruption. It shouldn't bee Simon's central message, but maybe he's got focus groups telling him otherwise.
