LOS ANGELES -- In his first public appearance since falsely accusing Gov. Gray Davis of illegally accepting a campaign contribution in a state office, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon stopped just short Thursday of saying he was sorry.

"I find it necessary to express, to everyone, my sincere regret for the way this matter was handled," Simon told an audience of about 100 at a Town Hall Los Angeles lunch forum.

The mistake made by the Simon camp is to take a public stand on the "COPS" allegations.

This seems awfully fishy. COPS endorsed Davis last time around.

Naturally, Davis can't win on the issues. Interestingly, Davis has recovered somewhat in the polls, not by issues, but because of smears. First, the smear involving Simon's investment firm and now, a false allegation that seems to have been floated by Davis allies in the hopes of baiting Simon.

Are Californians smart enough to catch this?

It wouldn't surprise me if the Simon campaign had been intentionally set up.

Seems amazingly convenient that a COPS official said he remembered the incident...then remembered the photograph...but did not look at the photograph to confirm.

And how exactly do we know when the photo was taken? How many times has COPS given money to Davis anyway? Maybe this was time 12 and we needed time 27...

Simon thought Davis killed California with the knife in the Den, when he obviously killed California with the pipewrench in the Dining Room. The right criminal, just a case of wrong weapon in the wrong location.

Davis stinks and even the best deodorant can't stop that smell...

Simon is finished; the guy doesn't have a clue as to how to run a campaign. I'll be voting for the Constitution Party or Libertarian Party candidate.

Every vote we get for Simon means Davi$ is less and less likely to get re-elected. Please re-consider the value of your vote and change your mind...

While I believe strongly in the rights of the other parties to run their candidates...

This is a once in a millennium chance to send a message to Sacramento that the Corruption must stop, Taxes must be reduced not increased, Businesses, the lifeblood of and government must be encouraged to stay in California not be driven away.

The Pay TollBooth to the Governor's office must be removed.
