Simon, Davis prepare for final two weeks

The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the release of a corrupt state official's secret claims about Gov. Gray Davis in a decade-old bribery scandal.

Court documents show that Mark Nathanson, a Beverly Hills executive who confessed to running a $734,000 bribes-for-permits scheme while a coastal commissioner, offered information in 1993 about a state official with whom he said he worked to get campaign contributions from commission applicants.

With barely two weeks left in the campaign, the events kicked off a final push to Nov. 5. Davis was set for a two-day statewide fly-around today, while Simon planned to campaign in San Luis Obispo, then hit the road in a campaign bus for a Central Valley tour Monday.

Nathanson was on his way to federal prison when he made the offer, but prosecutors dismissed him as a liar and refused to make a deal. He served three years in prison.

BTW...did you hear that PG&E filed suit and it may have a big impact on the bonds about to floated It was a AP story in this mornings paper.I think Davis wanted these bonds sold before the election.

Does the judge release them now while there's time to do damage control or drag his feet and risk an election eve bombshell? What kind of gyrations will the news outlets go through to soft peddle these revelations? Its tempting to laugh while they all squirm but we're talking about the highest levels of public responsibility here.

I doubt the vast majority of Californians would give a damn about those letters, or even be aware if they're released. Only hardcore Davis/Simon partisans are paying attention, and their minds are made up.
