MORE TROUBLE FOR THE GRAYSTER... Papers cleared by U.S. Supreme Court for release are unlikely to dispel the fragrance of corruption around Governor Gray Davis. A convicted felon formerly with the Coastal Commission asserts that Davis extorted campaign contributions from those seeking permits in coastal zones:
In the letters, the lawyers claimed [Mark] Nathanson was Davis' longtime friend and fund-raiser and described a series of meetings in a local restaurant concerning the alleged permits-for-donations scheme.
When they met, Davis would ask Nathanson to bring him lists of "names of persons that Mark had previously helped with Coastal Commission matters," as lawyer Jerrold Ladar wrote. Then Davis would scan the lists, seeking to learn "details regarding what Nathanson had done for (each) person" so he could solicit them for campaign donations, the letter said.
In making his calls, Davis would "suggest a link between (himself) and the approvals Nathanson had helped secure in order to solicit contributions from the individuals on the lists," as the other lawyer, Steven Braga, described it.
The lawyers also cited seven specific occasions on which -- by Nathanson's account -- Davis had allegedly sought to exploit Nathanson's position on the Coastal Commission to raise campaign cash.
One involved Nordlund, the Orange County developer. According to the letters, Nordlund had first asked Davis for help on his permit, and Davis -- at the time an assemblyman running for controller -- passed him on to Nathanson. At the time he pleaded guilty, Nathanson told the court he had asked Nordlund for $40,000 in campaign donations for an unspecified politician, but had been rebuffed.
The denial by the the governor's office was forthright:
Davis spokesman Steve Maviglio says Nathanson's story is false.
"There's no reason to give any credibility to anything this guy has ever said," he said. "He's a convicted felon."
And here I thought that - considering the exertions by the Democrats to get them the vote - convicted felons were a natural constituency for Mr. Davis. In any case, this episode advances our knowledge of Governor Davis's character and morals... not at all! posted by Gregory Hlatky at 1:52 PM
It does not seem possible that Davis would facilitate permitting for campaign ca$h...or does it???
Go Simon, END THE CORRUPTION!!!!

Here's an article I wrote on the Coastal Commission and Malibu politics. It should give you an idea what people are up against and why they'd have a powerful incentive to bribe politicians.
You can't get a single-family home on the water in Malibu for under $1 million.
