Gov. Gray Davis, defending a campaign defined by months of negative ads, insisted Tuesday that he has acted in self-defense in response to Republican attacks.

"I don't cast the first stone. I just have to fight back," the Democratic incumbent told The Chronicle editorial board about the barrage of negative ads in his campaign against Republican Bill Simon.

With just two weeks until the Nov. 5 election, Davis said he is feeling "optimistic" and "hopeful."

"We've had four tremendous years," Davis said. "In the face of a national recession and an energy crisis, we've made real progress in a host of areas -- and more important, California is a national leader again."

You can say anything in this state and get away with it if you are Democrat.

I wonder if the next thing Davis is going to do is blame Simon for all those bribes campaign contributions Davis has been receiving.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! Can anyone believe this? This is pathetic! Who spent $30 million on ads since the primary? How in the world can Davis with a straight face say that he's defending himself? Defending himself would be talking about his record. Simon didn't even go up on tv until June, Davis was up in April! This is such a joke ... I hope the press nail him on this, what a pathetic liar!

How in the world can Davis with a straight face say that he's defending himself?

Because he knows that there is no way tomorrow's LA Times headline story will call him on it, regardless of its newsworthiness.

When you own the media, you don't really have to watch your mouth.

"I don't cast the first stone. I just have to fight back," the Democratic incumbent told The Chronicle editorial board about the barrage of negative ads in his campaign against Republican Bill Simon.

And here I was bitching last July and August about all the Davis ads attacking Simon and Simons lack of airplay. How did I miss all those Republican ads?
