Simon to Lend His Campaign Up to $2 Million

Latest infusion will pay for TV ads through election day. Candidate touts business acumen.

By Matea Gold, Times Staff Writer

Republican Bill Simon Jr. plans to lend his gubernatorial campaign up to $2 million this week to compete with Gov. Gray Davis in a last round of television advertising, the Republican candidate and one of his senior strategists said Tuesday.

"Oh, I'll put a little more in," Simon told reporters after a speech to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council at a downtown hotel. "It will be enough to ensure that we're going to be up" on television through election day, he added.

Simon consultant Sal Russo said the latest cash loan from the candidate -- in the "ballpark" of $2 million -- will allow the challenger to compete with the governor's television buys.

So far, the GOP nominee has been significantly outgunned on the airwaves by Davis, who has already spent more than $30 million on television commercials in the general election -- substantially more than his opponent. During the remaining days of the race, Davis' campaign plans to run about $3-million worth of ads a week.

Simon, who has struggled to raise a fraction of the money Davis has collected, previously lent his campaign $9 million, including $4 million last month. Russo said the candidate is making another infusion because he believes the race is close.

I don't think Simon would be flushing $2 million down the toilet. He obviously feels he has a legitimate shot at winning. I agree, although he's still got his work cut out for him.

I hope that he shows a little personal side as well. Family, surfing, supporters, shots with W and Rudy. Maybe a slide show after a preface: "Gray Davis has taken tens of millions of special interest dollars to lie to you about me. Get to know me, you'll like me and what I want to do for this great state...."

Better the moron Simon throw his own money down a hole than the RNC do it.

Bill Simon...The ONLY person inept enough to lose an election to the MOST inept person to EVER hold the office of Govenor in California.

Pathetic.....

Where is the NRA money they said they would spend to help Simon?

I dunno, but I would trust the word of the NRA. Especially in the "leading" gun grabbing state of California where Simon can pull this one out. I do know the NRA's GOTV effort is underway here, all monthly magazines have area contacts and voter recommendations. In any event, methinks the next two weeks are going to be very exciting. Simon inept? And how much did you make last year? And how much have you given to charity? Where did you get your law degree? And when did Rudy fly into Indiana to support your candidate? Stick to what you know, Hoosier! Basketball...and let the adults in CA do the heavy lifting... Love you out-of-town naysayers who couldn't find their arse with a map but you know all about CA politics! ROFLMAO

If Simon is willing to commit his money to winning, so should the NRA and all other big dollar conservative donors (Hello people! Listening?). I don't know what the NRA is planning on doing, but I think ALL MEMBERS should write, email or phone the NRA and ask that they match what Simon is loaning himself, or a large part of it.

Davis has been AWFUL on our second amendment rights. And with another four-year term, he'll be worse because he won't have another election (no one really thinks he's going to run for president ... after the energy debacle, the western states hate him, and with New York so divided it's not a sure thing for a Democrat ... Davis would be raked over the coals as being too liberal nationwide.

Between guns, taxes, energy, education ... we can't AFFORD another four years of Gray Davis!

Simon should lend me that money instead -- at least I won't be throwing it down the drain like he is.
