California: Shame on Simon strategists
The Orange County Register ^ | Wednesday, October 23, 2002 | Doug Gamble Gamble is a former writer for President Reagan. He lives in Carmel.

Gamble is a former writer for President Reagan. He lives in Carmel.

Imagine a baseball game where one team wearing big red noses and oversized shoes continually drops fly balls, bobbles grounders and strikes out, yet incredibly has the score close in the ninth inning anyway because the opposing team is just as bad.

Simon oozes conviction whenever I've seen him, so I'm really not sure where this story comes from. Has he simply improved from a sloppy start this reporter cannot forget?

I think Simon's main mistake has been to dramatically underestimate the cost of running. I wouldn't be surprised if he was seduced into the venture by people who deliberately understated its cost to get him to sign up.

And when was the last time you saw Davis passionate about anything other than defending his record, anyway?

I've pinged a couple of my friends who've seen Simon in action so they can add their own impressions.

Sigh. As much as I wish it weren't true, the fact is that Doug Gamble could not be more accurate in his assessment of the Simon campaign and Simon as a candidate. I know there are a lot of people here on FR who want to "shoot the messenger," but their attitude won't change the truth.

Simon is inept - The CA GOP will never learn. They keep appeasing and backtracking when they should be having Davis' head over the open pit.

Someone said that when it comes to politics, the Republicans are the redcoats marching in lockstep in an open field while the DemonRats are the Minutemen picking them off behind the trees and bushes.

As true as this article is, I think it is primarily intended to be an Ed Rollins CYA piece. Didn't Rollins join the Simon campaign to "save the day"? And wasn't he the one responsible for the photo debacle? Why is his name not mentioned anywhere in the article? I think one old Reagan/Bush hand (Gamble) is looking out for another (Rollins) by trashing Russo and Simon.

THE MEDIA IN CALIFORNIA HAS A BLACKOUT ON THE SIMON CAMPAIGN.

Bill Simon CANNOT get his message out to the masses. This is a fact, and I challenge FReepers to list his campaign failures besides the one mistake he made in last month's debate.

Most FReepers are well aware that California is a proto-Marxist state, run by the Democratic Party and the culpable Democratic-suckup California media. So where has Bill Simon gone wrong? He's made his views known, he's made stump speeches, he's challenged the incumbant commissar's failures, he's received support from Rudy Giuliani and President Bush, and he beat the tar out of RINO Riordan.

Please, enlighten me. What should he have done differently?

the fact is that Doug Gamble could not be more accurate in his assessment of the Simon campaign and Simon as a candidate.

How many radio interviews have you heard w/ Simon? How many times have heard him speak in person? How many times have you met Simon?

Although I agree early on his campaign could have been a lot more refined (more money would have helped), this article is totally inaccurate about Simon the man. I've met him a couple of times, heard him speak, & heard him answer tough questions on the radio many times. The man is very sincere. He takes on & answers all questions. He is very warm & actually at the beginning of his campaign he was criticized for being too nice. Recently he has been much more energized and relentless in pounding Davis, while getting his message out.

Too bad Mr. Gamble did not see fit to obey Ronald Reagan's 11th Commandment. He would rather bloviate about the problems in Simon's campaign than volunteer his own brilliance to help fix it. I'm not a big fan of Sal Russo, but this kind of attack from a fellow Republican is unwarranted and will only fuel Republican voter apathy in Orange County, assuring a Davis victory.

The Republican circular firing squad in action.

Totally agree with you. The CA media is doing a number on Simon.

And the FR naysayers should stop whining incessantly like stuck pigs and support Simon before CA falls into the Pacific.

You've got that right. The media is falling all over themselves blaming the Simon campaign for a loss that may not even occur, and yet none of them are pointing their grubby little fingers at their persistent and decidedly one-sided negative coverage of Simon. And numerous folks here at FR love to oblige them. They stampede to negative threads about Simon, and they're nowhere to be found on threads with positive news.

Simon and his "All or NOTHING", "RINO" Screaming supporters are nothing but a bunch of CLOWNS! (Or, Bozo's, if you will).

Well...You clowns are about to get your wish...A BIG FAT NOTHING!!! And all of this when going up against the single most inept politician I have ever seen....Gray Davis. Well...Most inept right behind Simon, that is.

What SUCKS is that you're about to take the rest of the California Republican Party with you. I hope you're all happy with Gray Davis as your Govenor for another 4 years...You all DESERVE him!!

Yep. They've used the same tactic on GOP candidates for the past ten years - no coverage unless its negative. And certainly no substantive coverage of the issues.

Simon has done alot right - he's used talk radio far more than did Lundgren or Wilson - and little wrong except make a couple of novice mistakes that cracked the door open enough for the media to plunge in with their leftwing agenda.

I despise all mainstream media whores.

With all your CA-bashing comments you must really be envious of us Golden Staters. Is life really so bad for you in your Indiana trailer park?

I bash you clowns because you're backing a sure LOSER who is probably going to hurt my party, and the best you can do is bash the state in which I reside?

Weak...Liberal-like weak.

Gray Davis is the most incompetent governor in my life time.

He's left children without basic care.

What more do you need to know?

But, I suppose that is the effect of a governor who has no children... he doesn't understand family issues!
