SACRAMENTO - For the second year in a row, California faces a yawning budget gap of more than $20 billion -- a shortfall that could lead to higher income and vehicle taxes, and cuts to social services and school reading programs.

The Democrats, who control both houses, talked about the necessity to boost taxes, from vehicle license fees to income taxes on the wealthy. Other sources in the Capitol said lawmakers might also look at an Internet sales tax. Calling the situation a ``disaster,'' Senate leader John Burton, D-San Francisco, said that the budget can't be balanced by cuts alone and that taxes would need to be raised. Any solution would have to be fair to all Californians, he said, and not just target programs that aid the poor. ``Everybody takes a hit or nobody takes a hit.''
Good idea. Drive out all those nasty wealth creators in a cratering economy. Now Texas is going to get swamped with a bunch more Californians.

So why didn't the maggot infested San Jose Mercury document and print this reality weeks before the election.
Answer: The diseased maggots in charge of the Mercury have been in bed with Herr Davis and the tax and spend rats in the legislature for decades.
The cries for increasing taxes and to abolish or weaken Prop 13 will start coming from the LA Slimes, the Bees, this rag and of course the SF Gayrhonicle.
They will do nothing re real budget cuts. They will funnel money to the perverts, the dark siders, the teachers, and the illegal aliens like there is no budget crisis.
When the republican minority stands up and tries to block this, they will be portrayed as evil white conservative racists wanting to starve and under educate the chilrun.

"Any solution would have to be fair to all Californians,"I plugged this into the Altavista Babelfish translator for "Politician to English," and it came up with the following:
Any raising of taxes would have to be imposed on the wealthiest of Californians.

Democrats run absolutely everything in this state so, of course it's Bush's fault.
Yeah, ...that's the ticket.
Bush did it.

.....cuts to social services and school reading programs....
We'll know there is a serious attempt to solve the problem when they talk about cutting athletic programs instead of reading programs. That will kill two birds with one stone. Dumb jocks don't read any way.

Hill released her gloomy figures a little more than a week after the governor won a surprisingly close re-election over Republican Bill Simon. The candidates barely discussed the anemic economy, which underlies the state's budget woes.Rewriting history, again. Simon kept saying that the budget deficit would exceed $20 billion, but the media kept undermining him, calling his comments "campaign rhetoric" and the like.
Davis is scared. His election was much closer than he thought, he couldn't even get 50% of the vote. He outspent his opponent more than six-to-one and succeeded in getting the media to ignore the issues.
I don't know how anyone solves this problem. It is really, really serious. I hope the Republicans hold the line on tax increases, because higher taxes will really hurt when more people are struggling to make ends meet as it is.

I am particularly concerned about the liberals coming after Prop. 13.

Any raising of taxes would have to be imposed on the wealthiest of Californians. You know what this is? It's a sop to Barbra Streisand Alec Baldwin et al. They couldn't get Democrats elected at the National level to increase their taxes so they're going to do it at the state level to keep them happy.

They have been trying to kill it since it passed in 78. With the extreme change in demograpics and the growth of low income non home owners in this state prop 13 may be doomed. If that happens look for a spending orgy the likes of which this state has never seen. But it will only satisfy the liberals for a short time. In a year they will be broke again and looking for more money.

Liberalism is a disease. They are addicted to spending other people's money. The only known cure is too simple to believe. (Ya just vote 'em out)
