SACRAMENTO - California's budget deficit is too large to be closed with spending cuts alone, and lawmakers should consider a temporary tax increase, 14 economists said in a letter to legislative leaders.

But short-term tax increases would be better than using just budget cuts to erase a deficit that could reach $34.6 billion, he said.

``The Republicans have made it pretty clear to me . . . that they are not voting for any tax increases anywhere, any place, any time,'' said Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, D-San Francisco.

What part of no taxes do the Democrats not understand?

And anyway, since when has ANYONE heard of a TEMPORARY tax increase?????????????????????????????

To paraphrase the great Ronald Reagan : There is nothing so permanent as a temporary tax increase.

WRONG! According to Senator Tom McClintok, if they trim 9% off the budget, the budget will be in balance in 18 months.

Yea, right. Like the filthy, bottom dwelling communists who masquerade as democrats/democrats who masquerade as communists would ever roll back a tax. They would rather execute their children than give up a tax dollar, and they love their children.

Cutting that much from state spending would be ``a major drag on the economy,'' Janet Yellen, another Berkeley economics professor, added in a conference call with reporters.

A Berkeley economics professor, eh? So I'm sure she and her comrades have a (Dem) Party 5 Year Plan to ensure the workers have jobs!

I think most real (Austrian / Chicago school free market) economists would agree that cutting taxes and freeing productive capaital is EXACTLY what *will* improve the economy.

That is a nonsensical statement. Spending causes deficits. Eliminate spending, eliminate deficits.

And another thing: how many spending programs are tied to a percentage of revenues? Additional tax revenues will only drive up spending in these areas.

So long California. You were good to me those years ago, but I am so glad I'm gone now....

Wouldn't you love to have this econ professor teaching your kids? State spending makes the economy run, taxpayers are merely slaves. She should be shipped back to Russia.

Its hard to cut spending when your Governor has made so many commitments to hand out fat government contracts to his contributors.

I believe the recall is going to happen. Even Democrats want him out.
