Paleoconservatism is defined in the American Heritage Dictionary as, “extremely stubborn or stubbornly conservative in politics.”

While there are ideological distinctives, it seems that the biggest driving force among the paleos is that they are simply stubborn and cranky. It's a personality thing as well as ideological.

Neoconservatism emerged in the 1970s, as a reaction to the radical leftist agenda of the 1960’s. Neoconservatives were more interested in challenging the hippies and activists than dismantling the entrenched programs of the New Deal

I prefer the word "principled", not willing to forego integrity for quick but meaningless gains whose end result is the party moving even farther left. Kinda like is happening now.
