ORLANDO, Fla. — A Muslim woman who says her religious beliefs forbid her from publicly showing her face cannot wear a veil in her driver's license photo, a judge decided Friday.

Sultaana Freeman's (search) right to free exercise of religion would not be burdened by showing her face on the license, Circuit Judge Janet C. Thorpe ruled after hearing three days of testimony last week.

Freeman claims her religious beliefs require her to keep her head and face covered out of modesty and that her faith prohibits her face from being photographed.

Ya know, when this story got legs, I suspected this woman would turn out to be some sheissekopf white liberal.
I got a little patience for someone from a cultural that grew up with this pagan, absurd excuse for a religion (Islam's nothing more, really than an efficient method for controlling slaves), but for some reason seeing someone who should *know better* get into this crap... well. it just bites.

You do not have a "right" to a driver's license. To obtain one, you must meet certain requirements etc.

If her religion prevents her from showing her face, one would think she had sufficient conviction in her beliefs to obtain alternate transportation.

One of my concerns about this from the outset was that airport security uses drivers licenses as identification prior to boarding a plane. Without a picture or the ability to wear a veil, you could be letting Osama Bin Laden on the plane!!!

You have it absolutely right. I was listening to some of her testimony on the stand. She said that when she buys cereal boxes at the grocery store, she brings them home and has the children color the faces on the boxes with black markers.

Says that her daughter calls the faces "Yukky". She also said that she orders dolls for her daughter from a muslim catalog. According to her, the dolls have no faces. This is totally weird especially when the radio host who played the court clips had other muslims call in and they all said that they had never heard of anything so ridiculous.

This is all part of another agenda and as a Floridian I am very glad that Judge Thorpe did not buckle to this ridiculous religious claim.

During the hearing, Freeman conceded that she has had her face photographed without a veil since she started wearing one in 1997. She had a mug shot taken after her arrest in 1998 on a domestic battery charge involving one of twin 3-year-old sisters who were in her foster care. The children were removed from her home, according to records from the Decatur (Ill.) Police Services.
